Talking of Germany, here's a pic of our two dogs, amongst the best of German breeds ( one is the oldest German pure breed) walking in conditions in which they excel as search, and rescue. Sorry about the blatant bias .

And your right, I grew up with GSD's, one of my uncles was a RAF dog handler and taught me all there is to know about the breed.

My last one  - Duke- a sable, lived to 12 years old, for the last 4 years of his life I didn't need to tell him what to do, he would somehow know what was required of him, call it e.s.p. or what, but he was trained to perfection.

I always have my 'Pride and Joy' combination, Pride is the GSD, Joy is the majestic, gentle giant Leonberger.

Sorry to go on, but my dogs are a BIG part of my life, the Leo is off to Crufts in March, not competing, but in the Discover Dogs ( meet & greet) section.

One day we WILL get to Leonberg ( Baden-Wuerttemberg, that is).

I'm not biased, but I guess you haven't had an American Staffie…

This was my boy… James Nelson.

hi Gary,i love all dogs including staffies but i wouldn't trust that type of dog with a newborn baby.i wouldn't have a moments hesitation with both my shepherds(now deceased)i recently lost one of my greyhounds, they are another breed i would trust with anything.he's a stunning looking dog though.

Alan

Hi Spurno,

James was around for the birth of both my children and not once did he ever bark at them. He was very much a part of the family as my wife and children. It was only tonight that my boys mentioned that they miss him. He was always loyal, loved my boys and he was an inside/outside house dog. I had him from a pup at 6 weeks and he was always by my side for six years. He used to travel with me, come to work etc etc. All my clients loved him as well and he even had 'girlfriends' on some jobs !

Must remember that a dog is like a shot gun. It is how the 'owner' utilises it, looks after and handles it !

Really, these dogs are most pleasant. I did have a lot of confused people asking if James was an American Pitbull ?? Once I showed these people his papers and that James came from Champion bloodlines, it was all smiles !

James now sits on my book case as ashes, but never ever forgotten.

Cheers, Gary.

My Border Collie Lilly is my first dog, and she is now with us for well over ten years. I think I never want to be without a dog anymore - for I never met someone as beautiful as her. As bikt2steam said it doesn't need commands anymore. I think is not so much about breeds as any breed can win our hearts in seconds and keep them for ever …

P.S. Lilly graced (I'm not sure wether this is the right word in this context) herself for you guys yesterday …
