Ok I have a loco that im thinking of trying to reletter to my road, however all I want to remove is the current name on it which reads "Southern" so I want to just remove the name, but keep the road numbers on it, now when I run my hand on the lettering I do feel raised up letters so I assume they are not sealed or what ever, so I have some 50% and 91% alchol to use, so to make sure I do this right do I just need a small drop of either and let it sit for say a minute or so then peal off or whats the correct process to ensure the lettering is removed with out any issues?? also this is a basic collector loco from Hornby, if that helps!

pics of the engine in question can be supplied if needed.

Thanks for the help!

PS: yes im reading through the other threads that im finding on this but still unsure of the exact steps and timing things to make sure the paint is un touched!

Hornby numbers, and letters are 'screen-printed' rather than transfers, which makes them harder to remove. Bachmann are transfers, and can be easily removed with enamel paint thinners, Hornby - not so easy. I use a thin clutch pencil style glass fibre pen, gradually scratch the unwanted number/letter off ( work in circular movements, not straight), being careful not to use too much pressure or the scratches will become 'ruts'. Once the number is removed finish off with very fine 'wet & dry' paper, dust off, and apply gloss paint. Give the paint plenty of time to dry, and set ( I give it 24 hours), then apply the replacement transfers, when all is dry add a thin coat of matt varnish.  Well - that's how I do it, about 30 locos so far :thumbs.

ill lok into that, I did get the lettering off, I used a qtip swab and 91% rubbing alchol and then the best tool I have, my finger nail and they came off in seconds, yes I am sure I took some of the finish off the paint but oh well its fine, im going to try weathering this lock a bit and make it look "aged" any ways, faded paint and all!!
