Gday all. I have at last persuaded the leader of the opposition to let me in from the cold (the shed) and to build an empire in the spare room .
The layout in the shed was at a height of 3ft ish but I always felt it would have been more comfotable to work at had it been a wee bit higher. I am thinking of a height of about 40in ish for the new set up. I am 5ft9in and think this would be ok. Would welcome your thought and experience of bench heights.
Thanks
In from the cold, aaaahhhhh :

Hi John.
My advice would be to pick a comfortable office chair and get somone to measure a comfortable height for you. If you have a duck under then the higher the better.

There is no hard, and fast rule as to what height a layout should be, it's whatever suits your requirements, but don't forget to take into account that you have to reach across to which ever the width is going to be. I suffer from sciatica, so for the sake of comfort, and being a shorty at 5 foot 7inch my baseboards are 2 foot wide, so the comfortable height for me is 40 inch. All my point motors are top mounted, and diguised under lineside buildings. The wiring looms, connectors, solder tags, and rail wire droppers all come out to the operators side of the layout instead of underneath .

The thing to avoid is to be hunched over when working on the layout and to have to do knee bends to see the trains.  I favour ~ 4 ft for height but then I'm 6ft tall.

To illustrate, here's a shot of my old exhibition layout (now demolished):

I am 5'10"  and my main part of my layout is 43.5" high & the centre peninsula is 45.5" and both are good.

Great advice from all.  Looks like around the 40in mark will be about right for me . Will keep you posted.

Cheers

John,

For me there is nothing like watching a layout where the trains are at eye level -  this presents a problem in that if you are viewing standing up you will not be able to have a layout with any meaningful width.   I  compromised and have mine at a level where the track is approx eye level when sitting down.

That sounds like a plan. Will keep you posted on the final decision. Cheers

At six-feet tall I found my previous layouts at 39 inches to be comfortable.  I am currently building a layout with the baseboard top 55 inches from the ground which is just below eye-level for me.  I am thinking of experimenting with a baseboard height of eight feet.  I reckon that if I place a step-ladder on a table and then balance two legs of a chair on the ladder, I could just about get a reasonable view of the trains!

Hi All I favour the office chair approach, I can "leg the chair" chasing the train, and if I nod off I wont fall over.     all the best Kevin

Staying on the thread Kevin.
