Happy Sunday All I am really keen on the idea of a Viaduct, but I am at the planning stage, and this is the important stage with a permanent structure! as you all know but I have read so many ideas about "Ballasting". The question is which ever way you choose to lay your track, how do you lay track on a Model Viaduct? Passed Driver ____________________ Staying on the thread Kevin. |

Kevin, on my viaduct, using Peco flex track, I pinned it to the cardboard that makes up the viaduct with Peco SL14 track pins, then ballast in the "normal" manner using watery PVA - of course the entire viaduct was sprayed first with matt varnish to protect the paper & card from moisture. A very old thread Sol but I'm planning to have a Scalescenes viaduct to carry my rising track over the lower level tracks. One end of the layout will, as you probably know, have a scratchbuilt viaduct clad in Wills coarse stone sheets. The other end will have a straight single track Scalescenes viaduct, probably in random Ashlar as yours is. Looking at your track bed, is that the "kit" width - 65mm - or did you reduce it to fit your site ? Also, are the stones around the arches a part of the kit ? If so, it's given me an idea for the Wills version..............  ____________________ 'Petermac |

Wow - I thought you'd be tucked up in your pit Sol - thanks for your speedy reply. When you say it should have been wider, do you mean for train clearance from the parapet walls or because the kit is designed to be wider ? I know the kit comes in at 65mm wide for single track but ideally, I'd like mine to be a bit narrower and wondered if that would foul up the build. ____________________ 'Petermac |

I did read that Sol but didn't realise you meant the viaduct track base - I thought you meant the base it sits on .................. Why would making the track bed 4mm too narrow prevent you adding the designed double thickness buttresses - aren't they on the outside of the viaduct and so it wouldn't matter what width it was ? Unless ...........................is the deck (trackbed) supposed to be wider than the piers and arches ? That could mean it is designed to sit on top of the double thickness buttresses rather than on top of the actual walls ............  ____________________ 'Petermac |

 It certainly looks better than alright Sol. I'll buy it and read the instructions to see why the bed width is so critical. Other than having to cut down the piers and undersides of the arches, I don't see why one can't reduce the width by a few millimetres ................................... ____________________ 'Petermac |
