Big mistake![]() Rubbish, the loco sound like an old Lima with that whining sound from the motor/gears, just about drowns out the substandard sound. Not real sure if they should be silent running or not like the other Hornby locos I have! People say get the chip blown but if the loco is noisy there is no point. Would a bigger (if it would fit) bass speaker fix it? Do not buy one of these Locos as you will do your money ![]() |

Do you know the serial number of the item? Even its running number and livery might be enough information. There is a known problem from one batch of Hornby 08's where the gear tower starts to emit a screaming sound after a short time and (sometimes) related to the higher speed range. It is possible you have one of those. The fix is to slightly ease the securing of the gears and ensure they are well lubricated. The Hornby 08 in its most recent iteration is at least comparable with the Bachmann offering and arguably better in the detail. I find they run equally well and are about as quiet as each other. The Hornby "waddles" a little less and for the picky among us it certainly looks better. |

I have the same loco and it runs really quietly and smoothly. The sound selection on the chip could be better but as I bought it from Hattons for only slightly more than the cost of a sound chip (GBP118) I'm not too fussed ( also aided by the fact that I seldom get to hear the 12" to the foot version) I would return it as it definitely has a faulty mechanism. ____________________ Dave Notmutley British OO outline, DCC - NCE PowerPro, Sound chips, Computer Control- RR&Co software |

It may need to go to back to the seller, a dealer or even back to Margate for replacement or rectification. While on the topic and be cause the link isn't that easy to find here's a reference to one of the earlier reports of the problem I referred to. Yours may be showing the same problem or it may be something different and unique to your item. |

Well Hereford Models replied to me and said If I wasn't happy just send it back and they will refund the money or send a new one! I thought better of a new one as I may have the same problems so, I asked them to send me a City of Manchester, LMS Black, 62146 in exchange and what money is over to put in my account for a later day. Great service they give and a thumbs up to them for the reply and so quick as well. ![]() |
