![]() This is my third layout since returning to the hobby after 30 years and I am still falling for the same trap - I want to have as much track as possible in the available area - I want to run prototypical length trains in the limited space yet at the same time have sidings here there and everywhere so that I can waste hours performing shunting operations. My first layout was too boring - basically four oval tracks with a station. There was no fiddle yard so operations were pretty basic. Second layout was far more adventurous being based on a Atlas layout - it was tri level and had a fiddle yard but for some reason I could not get the inclines right and I kept having derailments so eventually I pulled it to pieces vowing that layout 3 would not have any inclines whatsoever. ( Oh and layout 3 would be built in sections so that in need it could be dismantled - more on that later.) So layout three started with good intentions - to make the most of the room it would not have a fiddle yard but enough track that the fiddle yard would be the layout itself. Plus to make it more interesting the layout would consist of three loosely linked dioramas 1. a lake with a bridge running over it, 2. a country section where trains could get up a bit of speed, and 3 a terminus with two platforms with access to a loop ( so that I could turn steam trains around without the need for a turntable) and a small goods yard. This was the first layout to use DCC and I would never go back (mind you the wiring under the layout is not a pretty sight. This is a view of the "lake" in the diorama that is situated behind the town and is not visible in the photo above ![]() (I usually stop at anything later than the 1990's but the Class 70 is so ugly I just could not resist the temptation) This next photo is taken looking in the opposite direction to the first ![]() and finally a close up of the class 14xx standing in the station - working lamp fitted as well as power extension to allow power to be supplied from pickups in following carriage. ![]() As you can see the layout has a lot of junk sitting on it and is in need of a good tidy up - which it will get over the coming weeks following the inspiration I have been given from the members and their layouts on this website. ____________________ Dave Notmutley British OO outline, DCC - NCE PowerPro, Sound chips, Computer Control- RR&Co software |

Isn't is amazing the lessons we learn and the changes we make because of them! I'm still on layout ONE! ![]() Wayne ____________________ My Layout "The South Shore Line": http://yourmodelrailway.net/view_topic.php?id=509&forum_id=21 |

I think it's a great looking layout and appreciate the amount of work that has gone into it. I'm also pleased that you have found our Gallery and how to use it. It is the preferred method of showing photographs on here, I say preferred because you can have your pictures hosted wherever you like. It is cheap here though ![]() ____________________ Barchester |

Your layout looks great Dave! Is the Midland Pullman the old Hornby one, if so how does it run on your tracks! ____________________ Bozzy(never known to pass a pub) |

Very impressive Dave![]() You sure have a lot of stock and fortunately a lot of space in which to use it ![]() A couple of questions..........how much automatic operation do you do with RR&Co/ Secondly thats a really neat idea to permanently hook up the 14xx and get more electrical contacts.........perhaps you could post " a how you did it" either here or in a separate thread..........its something I have always wanted to do but dont really know how to make and fix the additional pick ups Regards ____________________ John Granby III Lenz DCC,RR&Co Gold V9 B4 Windows 10 |

Excellent layout Dave. I know the feeling about full length trains and cramming in as much as possible. My layout, which I started about 18 months ago, I now call Topsy 'cos it just grewed! Derek |

Ianbo wrote: Your layout looks great Dave! Its an old Triang Western region version. Acquired about 8 years ago, before prices went ballistic, it ran Ok but was very noisy due to the serrated driving wheels, traction was average as it was decigned for magnehsion ( spelling ?) I converted to DCC which improved control but eventually after a lot of experimentation ended up replacing the old motor with a Hollywood Foundry drive system. Without the old wheels traction became an issue so I added some additional weight (as well as additional pickups on the trailling wheels). This improved traction but I eventually resolved the issue completely by adding a small quantity of BullFrog Snot to one of the driving wheels. Dave I must confess to having placed an order for the new Bachmann Midlands version ![]() ____________________ Dave Notmutley British OO outline, DCC - NCE PowerPro, Sound chips, Computer Control- RR&Co software |

John Dew wrote: Very impressive Dave Hi John, I'll post something later on the 14xx as I will need to take some photos. In regard to RR&Co, I curently use it mainly as a control panel for points/turnouts. I did initally get as far as automated control of a loco but then became side tracked by other things such as using the software to control points and more recently signals. I currently have block detection around the layout so that I can monitor trains on the layout but very recently have installed a USB Loconet as well as my original NCE DCC so that I could have computer controlled signals ( gave up waiting for NCE to deliver on their kit) and to enable me to experiment with train tracking, as I find in its current state, trains can get lost so I'm hoping that Loconet and computer system will be able to tell me what train is in what block without having to allocate them at the begining ( hope that make sense). This is my current Switchboard view. I use flagman to control the signals ( I only have home signals so that has made set up a bit easier although the team digital SIC24AD that I am using is an intelligent piece of kit that can be programmed without a computer ( I use decoder pro) to work a number of sequences for home and distant signals. Having spent some time looking through your posts I'm guessing that you won't be using modern signals although apparently the same kit can be used to drive motors that could work sempahore signals. ![]() As you can see the picture is taken in edit view so that the block detail is showing. I use the toggle switches to change the points/turnouts and the signals are programmed so that I can tell if the points are set correctly and the track ahead is clear. My next piece of work is to try and automate running on some sections so that I can have tarins running automatically while I tinker in the sidings with shunting etc. Possibly contrary to normal protypical running my layout can have trains running in both directions on the same legth of track ( block 30-13 for example) so I am also interested to understand the use of Macros and some of the other features of RR&Co to see if i can program the software so that headons are avoided. ( I tried this previously but ended up in grid lock !!) Dave ____________________ Dave Notmutley British OO outline, DCC - NCE PowerPro, Sound chips, Computer Control- RR&Co software |

Great layout Dave, but boy...am I glad I don't have the space that you and some others here seem to have. SWMBO would change the combination to the safe if I contemplated spending the amount of money it would take to stock your layout all of which of course I WOULD NEED. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ____________________ Nick AKA Woody ------- Much Murkle GWR a layout in the making Much Murkle website |

Hi Dave Thats a great looking switchboard ![]() I see there are some grey squares just like the ones that I saw on Chris's switchboard.........never seen them before......what is their purpose...........what have I been missing? ![]()
I am afraid my signals are purely cosmetic and likely to remain so...........Geoff R and Brian are the resident experts and I am sure you will be hearing from them As you can see the picture is taken in edit view so that the block detail is showing. I use the toggle switches to change the points/turnouts and the signals are programmed so that I can tell if the points are set correctly and the track ahead is clear. You can always learn something from looking at other switchboards............my focus is on running schedules so I rely on the computor to switch the points but when running manually there are a couple of key points where it would make a tomn of sense for me to insert switches rather than making two mouse clicks......thank you ![]() In regard to RR&Co, I curently use it mainly as a control panel for points/turnouts. If all the blocks are correctly set up you (and they look as though they are) you shouldnt br "losing" trains. There has to be a startpoint so initially you have to assign them to the correct blocks and make sure they are correctly orientated thereafter it should just be a question of maintenance My next piece of work is to try and automate running on some sections so that I can have tarins running automatically while I tinker in the sidings with shunting etc. Possibly contrary to normal protypical running my layout can have trains running in both directions on the same legth of track ( block 30-13 for example) so I am also interested to understand the use of Macros and some of the other features of RR&Co to see if i can program the software so that headons are avoided. ( I tried this previously but ended up in grid lock !!) Try setting up a simple shuttle and once you are satisfied with that try getting it work with a timetable then set up a second schedule.....prove that and then insert it into the timetable Depending on the version you use you can put temporary locks on the entry/exit of a block so that for a brief period it is a one way block......then when the Down train has cleared the block you can release the lock which will permit the Up train to enter the block.................I havent tried this yet but I sort of understand the theory Not sure if this helps......but it is the start of a dialogue ![]() ____________________ John Granby III Lenz DCC,RR&Co Gold V9 B4 Windows 10 |

Hi John, Many thanks for your comments. The grey shaded blocks are just markers I have inserted using Tools/image. The two on the left hand side are to remind me that there are platforms - the one on the right hand side is to remind me that the siding is part of a "Y" loop so not to leave unattended rolling stock in that area ( although you can see from the photo of the layout I have two guards vans parked there at present !! ![]() I haven't tried running locos automatically for sometime and not since I upgraded to Version 7 gold. I did spend about 3 hours yesterday trying to recall how I had set up schedules and eventually ended up being side tracked and had a loco running on "run with interlocking" but for some reason it kept stopping at block 50-07 and 50-09. So I investigated those two blocks and found that running RR&Co using Loconet with NCE appears to give me a train detection tab that I don't have if I run "offline" and the block set up looks different so I need to read the manuals to see if I can find out what is going on. I suspect that I may have got myself into what I would describe as a "self inflicted technical log jam" with my set up by using Loconet as well as NCE. Still as the setup is only using the Loconet for signal control it is an easy matter to disconnect and see if things run OK on the single system as they did before. I like your idea of starting from scratch again on setting up automatic running so I will try again today and let you know how I get on. I'll post under your RR&Co Tutorial and FAQs under Automatic Operations if that is OK with you. ____________________ Dave Notmutley British OO outline, DCC - NCE PowerPro, Sound chips, Computer Control- RR&Co software |

Cheers![]() Successfully have a schedule up and running - thanks to your very helpful guide. I assume you now have multiple schedules - is there any trick to organising them ? and is it possible to launch from buttons on the main switchboard or do you have to set up a timetable? ![]() ____________________ Dave Notmutley British OO outline, DCC - NCE PowerPro, Sound chips, Computer Control- RR&Co software |
