I have no idea about the Hornby version about to be released but i have seen varoius videos on You tube of 08`s with either Howes or SWD chips in them i presume how the video maker records them makes a big differance as i have listened to ones with the apparent same makers chip in and they sound completely differant so i found it difficult to say what is good or not some of the videos sounded awfull I think the makers of these chips should produce a good quality video of their own to advertise their product and not leave it to amateurs who through no fault of their own produce something that can actually put a potential customer off.
At the end of the day its the sound you are paying for so i think they all lack in actual presentation of their product which often deters people from buying it.
Sound in the hobby is now here to stay and will only increase so i feel the product should be presented to the customer in a more proffesional way an not expect people to buy on faith and amateur videos.

I agree Brian

The detail on the body looks the same as the none sound version, and it's a far price (£130) £70 more for the sound decoder, and if you can alter the sounds then even better, but it might not even need altering, we will wait and see.

I wonder if Hornby (and Bachmann) have thought about adding some buttons on their web site on the product pages for us to press and hear some of the sounds through the computer interface? They have a number of viewable images for most products, so adding a few relatively short sound files ought to be feasible.

Hi,it is possible to fit lights to the 08 with a kit from Express Models, but I don't know why Hornby don't supply them fitted.

My 08 arrived today. Once I got it running, it is really very smooth and a joy to watch at slow speed. I say once I got it running, because one of the pickups for one of the rear wheels was bent out of shape and not making contact at all with the wheel, which seriously reduced running capability.

As for sound, I am very happy with it, given the very small size. Nothing protrudes into the cab, so that all the cab detail is still completely visible. The sounds are great as far as I am concerned, and considering the size available for a speaker. The chip is a Loksound 3.5, so could be reprogrammed if one wanted. There are plenty of instructions included in regard to re-programming CVs.

I did not find any accessory vacuum pipe fittings in the box, although they are referred to in the instructions. Not sure I would fit them anyway as I would want clear access for kadee couplings both ends of the shunter. Not even really sure where the accessories would fit in the box - but the holes for them are very clear on the body of the loco.

Overall, very pleased.

Sounds :roll::roll::roll: good Geoff, will you be using this in the box-file project ?

Also that's bad not having any of the detailing parts included, even if you are not going to install them.

Loksound 3.5 :hmm:hmm:hmm that changes things a bit, and has it got lights fitted ?

Hi Geoff, the detailing pack in the Hornby 08 box is in the little depression in the top of the polystyrene packaging, when I first opened mine I missed it.

Found the accessory bits - they were probably in the hole in the packaging that Nigel mentions, but I had missed them and they had dropped to the floor and hidden themselves amongst the rubbish in my train room:oops:

Not sure about the micro layout, Alan. I am considering N at the moment.

And no, it does not have lights. I guess things are already tight. I have fitted lights to a Bachmann 08, and that was tight let alone with a speaker as well, especially if keeping the cab clear.

In any case, lights on a shunter are not quite the same as on a main engine. I think there are both marker lights and front/rear lights and the Express Models kit only addresses the former (or is it the latter). As the lights are so small on the shunter, I don't think it takes anything away by them not being fitted.

If you wanted, you could always try to add them, provided you knew what you were doing with the function outputs of the chip. And, of course, provided that the chip does have function outputs. It may be a special without any surplus connections. I don't plan to open up the body any time soon to have a look, as I am afraid that I might not get it all back in again!

I went to buy one this afternoon, but after testing it, I thought that the motor noise was to high, and the faster it ran the louder the the motor noise became, has any body else found this ?

Hi Alan,  I have not found the new Hornby 08 particularly noisy myself.

I have just done a test with my Bachmann 08 against the new Hornby 08.

The Bachmann has more of a raspy sound from the get go and is fairly constant in volume whatever the speed.

The Hornby makes almost no noise at all at scale walking speeds, but then with speed increasing, the motor makes more of a whining sound which does get louder the faster it goes, but it is not a sound that I find worrying. In any case, with the sound chip enabled, I cannot hear the motor noise even at maximum speed.

It might well be a subjective thing, but it may also be that you have a noisier example for some reason?

Interesting Geoff

I tried two 08's in the shop and one was a lot worse than the other one, but even at slow running ( which was really slow) I could hear the motor, which is a real shame as the sound side at slow running was brilliant, I wanted to buy this loco for the Box-file project, but feel that it would drive me mad having to listen to the motor all the time, so it's back to the drawing board, I will listen to it again, as I feel it's a very cheap way of getting  Loksound 3.5 sound decoder, I might just buy it and replace it with a normal decoder and put the decoder in another loco !

Geoff did you purchase the Green or the EWS version ?

Green version, Alan. I have listened to mine again, and it really doesn't make any sound from the motor when crawling along.

:cheers Geoff

I will have another listen to one this week and make up my mind, I was testing a EWS, not that it can make any difference, but it did look good :hmm
