OK, so I want to burn some of my pics on to a CD.  Easy, you say.  Not so, chaps.  When I click on the picture and look in Picture Tasks, there is no option to" Copy to CD."  Am I looking in the wrong place?  :???:

Max unless you are using a special photo package it is quite easy to copy photos to a cd

All you need to do is put your blank cd in the drive then go to where you keep your photos if in a folder all you do is right click on folder then go down to send to then select send to removble drive or whatever its says as your cd this will then create a tempory folder called files to be written to cd and will allow you to drop in as many folders as you want in as long as you dont go over the size of the cd.

If you want you can do it with individual photos not folders but it will take longer.

you will see an icon on the taskbar which says files to be written to cd when you are ready open and select burn files to cd and you are away.

Your photos will then be backed up

cheers Brian

Hi Brian.  When I right click on the photo, then send to - there is no drive option there.  Only desktop, skype etc.

Just as Brian says :thumbs

Unless you have  a burning programme like Nero 6/7, which makes it even easier

Brian, I followed your instructions & did not put a CD in until I had selected & send to D drive & only oput it in when asked - then it all worked well. Max does not have that option on the Right Click.

Yes.  I do have a blank CD in the drive, Brian.

I have just been off the air, reloading my LG/Nero driver.

Still nothing.

Max this might be a silly question, but are you opening Nero first?  We have Nero, but if I just right click a photo in, say, my documents, there's no Nero option for me, although there is some other burner on the subsequent menu. I haven't even tried doing it that way before.

Max something must be wrong then i assume the dvd burner is backward compatable and can burn cd`s aswell as DVD`s?

If you can see the cd burner in my computer window and it shows a cd in it

you can acually drag on drop or copy and paste them onto it that will do the same as i mentioned earlier

cheers brian

I can't see a CD in the burner in My Computer.  It's a brand new CD/DVD burner.  There has to be something else wrong.  I'm going to try to burn a CD on my laptop.

Mike the Nero will only burn DVDs  it has no CD burning option.

OK Gurus.  Here we go . . .

I copied the pictures on to an external drive and put that into my laptop.

I moved the pictures from the drive into My Documents in a folder marked CD Burn Files.

I put a blank CD in the laptop.

I opened the Folder and left clicked a picture.  No CD burn option.  I right clicked the picture and clicked Send To - no burn option.

I clicked on My Computer, DVD Drive - it said, "please insert a disc into the drive."

I'm using TDK CD-R 700MB GOLD blanks - are they wrong?  Should I be using DVD blanks?  I'll try one and get back to you . . .

There should be a drop down list in Nero for DVD, CD or CD/DVD, at the top of the Nero window. Each gives you different options in the main Nero window (CD/DVD gives you everything).

Max

If you say that  your copy of Nero only burns DVD's put one of those in and try, or download the latest copy of Nero, as that should copy to both CD  & Dvd,.

But As Brian has said, because you have XP, you should also have windows cd/dvd burning programme, does your drive work, have you tried to read anything else in that drive.

Max, when you re-loaded Nero, did it give you options on what you want copied from the disc?

Alan, I have just played a DVD, a CD with .wav files, a normal CD.  It will rip and burn audio CDs.  It just won't copy pictures.  When I launch any of the many versions of Nero I have, it will only deal with audio and or video files.  If I put a blank CD or DVD it asks me to insert a disc, because the disc is blank.

There seems to be something blocking picture files, as there are no options to copy to a CD on any of the picture files.  They are in .jpeg format, so they should work, but they just won't.

I'm beginning to think there is something not right with the pictures, but I haven't worked out how to test that theory, as all I have at present are pictures from the same camera.

I'm going to fire up my external hard drive.  There are some pictures there from Wendy's camera.  We'll see if they are any different.

I have XP Home edition & this is in the Help & Support

writable CD into the CD recorder.

  • Open My Computer.
  • Click the files or folders you want to ccopyopy to the CD. To select more than one file, hold down the CTRL key while you click the files you want. Then, under File and Folder Tasks, click Copy this file, Copy this folder, or Copy the selected items. If the files are located in My Pictures, under Picture Tasks, click Copy to CD or Copy all items to CD, and then skip to step 5.

  • In the Copy Items dialog box, click the CD recording drive, and then click Copy.
  • In My Computer, double-click the CD recording drive. Windows displays a temporary area where the files are held before they are copied to the CD. Verify that the files and folders that you intend to copy to the CD appear under Files Ready to be Written to the CD.
  • Under CD Writing Tasks, click Write these files to CD. Windows displays the CD Writing Wizard. Follow the instructions in the wizard.
Notes

    • To open My Computer, double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
    • Do not copy more files to the CD than it will hold. Standard CDs hold up to 650 megabytes (MB). High-capacity CDs hold up to 850 MB.
    • Be sure that you have enough disk space on your hard disk to store the temporary files that are created during the CD writing process. For a standard CD, Windows reserves up to 700 MB of the available free space. For a high-capacity CD, Windows reserves up to 1 gigabyte (GB) of the available free space.
    • After you copy files or folders to the CD, it is useful to view the CD to confirm that the files are copied. For more information, click Related Topics.

I think the above uses the Inbuilt CD Writing Wizard of Windows, not Nero
  • Note the word Copy is now blank. actually now white

where a cd is concered it does not matter if they are audio pictures files or whatever they should copy

your file format can be anything it could be a picture.max format it would still copy

All the cd does its a storage area it does nothing with whatever you put on there.

A daft question but for some reason whatever you use as photo package this does not set permissions on the file the photo is stored does it so the file cannot be changed or copied for some reason unless you change the permissions?

This is a long shot and i would be surprised if it did that

The fact you cant see the cd when its in the drive tells me the problem is either the cd`s you are using or the drive

    cheers Brian

The external hard drive has pictures from different sources.  None of them will copy to a CD.  There is no Copy to CD option when I click on the picture files in the external drive.  Maybe I need to re-load my Office Software?

There is another pack of a different brand up in Wendy's studio.  I'll try them, but I really don't think it's the problem.  The burner works perfectly in all modes except copying pictures.  I might have to reload my Office Software.

I've tried a blank from another pack.  Still nothing.  I can't believe the blanks aren't compatible, because they record music onto them with this burner.

    Max

    Can you

"copy and paste "  your folder with the photos in, to another drive,, ie external, because if you can do that then the problem must be with the drive it's selfhave you tried to burn just a word file, as a test to see if you can do that, hang on, what do you use for burning your music, as that might have set the drive to only work with that programme ?

I was actually asking Brian to Skype, Alan.  I have actually given up.  The CD was only for the NMRA website, so it's not important.  It would have been nice to be able to do it, but this is the first time I've ever been asked, so it's not likely to happen again.

Max, clicking on My Computer should take you to the main part - the top being  files & one is called Max's Documents & below that are the various drives/devices,

Click on Max's documents & it sems the only folders that have the "copy to CD" are My Vidoes, My Pictures & My Music - based on the folder name.

You may have to re-load Office.

I have been working on it today, Alan.  There is something wrong with the software - even after I reloaded Office.  To see my problem, open one of your photograph files.  Click on a picture.  On the upper left there are picture tasks.  One of those options (usually the bottom one) is Copy file to CD.  That option is missing.

It is also impossible to copy a picture file to the CD burner via any other path - believe me, I've tried them all.

Some time ago I was having trouble renaming my picture files.  Someone on YMR led me to a box which needed to be checked and the problem went away.  I'm going to do a search to see if I can find that thread.  Then I will go to that area and see if the idiot who unchecked the box has done something else.

Stand by for further developments - or not . . .

I found it.  It was Dulkedog who led me to the Folder options and we fixed the "Hide Extensions" options.  I reset all the options to default, but it hasn't made any difference this time.  Maybe he'll have another brilliant idea?

Nero doesn't work either.  There is no option in Nero for copying pictures to a CD.  I can burn DVDs, I can rip and burn audio CDs.  I can play DVDs.  The only thing I can't do is Copy Photographs to a CD.

I have copied all relevant pictures on to a 2GB drive.  I'm going to take it up to the studio as Wendy has copied pictures on to CDs on her laptop.

OK.  Bearing in mind that all four machines have been loaded with my Windows Business software, I have three laptops and a desktop.  The picture files are on the desktop main drive.

I loaded all my pictures into a folder and moved that folder on to an external 2GB drive.  I put the drive into the laptop in Wendy's studio and copied the pictures on to a CD.  I removed the drive and opened the CD and I could look at the pictures.

Wendy's laptop in the studio has the option Copy to CD in Picture Tasks, which neither my laptop, which is attached to the layout, nor the desktop has.  Naturally her laptop copied the pictures to the CD.

I returned to my play room.  My laptop, which doesn't have the Copy to CD in the Picture Tasks, opened the CD successfully.  The CD will not open in the desktop CD/DVD drive.

To copy pictures from my desktop, the procedure is:-

    1.  Move the pictures to a portable drive.

    2. Take the drive up to the studio and copy the pictures on to a CD

The burning question (pardon the pun), is why do I not have the option Copy to CD in the Picture Tasks drop down of the folder?

i dont know how you manage it

You do seem to get the wierdest computer problems

im sure it must be something that has been changed on your picture file options that is stopping you copying anything something like a read only permission or something on those type of files.

Im surprised Wendy let you use hers :lol: you will become known as the computer Jonah:lol::lol:

That's why I have so many computers, Brian.  The hope is that at least one will be working :exclam  If I didn't know me as being so trustworthy, I'd think I was making it up :exclam

I agree with your diagnosis, but what is it :question and, better question, where is it :question

max check this if you can

Open My Computer, right click on your CD drive and click on Properties.
Click on the recording tab and click on Enable.

if it does something your copy to cd will return

    cheers Brian

Brian.  The CD Drive D only has the tabs: General Autoplay Hardware InCD and Sharing.  The Drive E has Recording and I clicked Enable, but I'm still not able to copy pictures to either Drive.

I wonder if you have a sofware problem, with your copy of windows, because if you have tried everything, and then it works on another computer, the problme must be your copy of XP, have you been installing all the updates on the problem computer !!

I think so, Alan.  They are all on the router network and we install them as they come up.  I think you are right, though.  It's just a matter of finding it.  This is the first time I have tried to copy photos to a CD, so it doesn't come up very often.  I can do it via the flash drive, so I'm not stuck.  Thanks.

Another possibility is that the CD/DVD drive has "forgotten" that it can read CDs - maybe flashing the firmware on the drive with an updated copy will help. I know there was a problem a few years ago with BenQ drives having similar symptoms.
