Ever since I first bought this Pug it's run like a three legged goat. I permanently coupled a wagon to it to which I'd made and fitted pick ups. This improved it but I wanted to have it running on it's own so I dived in to it. I didn't think to take pictures but it was all pretty simple really. I stripped it down completely and took the light weight weight out of the boiler and cut and bashed lead sheet (no I haven't been on any Church roofs) to fit the boiler. I left the Zimo MX621 decoder to one side and put an MX630 on top of the lead wrapped in Kapton tape. The boiler now weighs in at 50 Grams as opposed to 28 before. Then I ran the wires through to the cab including the positive blue and fitted a Lais stay alive with it's black wire going back to the decoder ground.

I'm impressed with the way it performs now and might have a look at some others that don't perform 100%

Peter did you try it with and without the stay alive ? I've heard mixed reviews about the Lais stay alives. Im happy with the performance of Lais decoders for cheaper, older Locos but so far havent tried their stay alives.

I didn't try it without the stay alive because it's so small and still pretty light at 50 grams. The thing to watch out for with the Lais stay alive is that the wires can detach quite easily; I've had to solder a couple back on and made a better job than the original. As for performance, very good.

Ps: The wires are OK if you don't move them around too much when fitting.

Hi Peterm.   I have just noticed your workbench, I must have missed that before? I have a few pugs but didn’t want to make a mess of them, they all run okay even though they came from ebay . It’s a pity that you didn’t take any photos as you were progressing with the job. Would you please advise me on how you converted your pug, and is it one of the bigger type or the Dapol type.  Best wishes Kevin

Excuse my ignorance Kevin, but I know of only one type of pug. Mine is a Hornby, ex Dapol I believe. Anyway, as above, I stripped it right down (just keep taking screws out until it's down to it's component parts). The weight in the boiler is too light so using some sheet lead that I nicked off church roofs ;-) I cut and bashed it, glueing it together and glued it into the boiler in place of whatever alloy it was that was originally in there. I left room for the Zimo decoder, soldered a black wire to the ground pad and wrapped the whole thing in Kapton tape to prevent shorts and ran the wires back through to the motor and a Lais stay alive in the cab.

Sorry no diagramme, but it's only red to the right hand pickups, black to the left. Orange to the motor terminal that was connected to the right hand pickups and grey to the left. The positive lead to the stay alive if you want one is blue which connects to the blue common positive, then the black wire from the stay alive is soldered to the ground pad on the decoder. I only know how to do this on Zimo decoders.
