Hi All. I have had an idea?? But it is only in the planning stages, the idea is a fold out scenery board at one end of my plank.But it is “3 ply “, and to keep it simple I would like (to use)“Araldite” a pair of lightweight hinges to the board, The question is, can it be done? I wouldn't rely on glue to hold hinges Kevin. There's lots of stresses and strains on them so the bond would, I'm sure, fracture in no time. Why can't you use screws ? ____________________ 'Petermac |

Hi Petermac. Thank you for your reply. That is why I floated my plan, before it could sink. You are probably quite correct , but screws in 3mm ply? It may work. Best wishes. Kevin

If you use the nuts and bolts Kevin, use a piece of metal on the other side from the hinges as a washer (just drill holes for the bolts to pass through) The larger the metal plate you use the more strength it will add to the ply. Hi Kevin, 3mm ply - how many plies? The problem with Araldite (epoxy) is that it will adhere quite nicely to the first ply, any stress and the ply will delaminate as the epoxy is stronger than the ply adhesive. Unless you have a backing plate (wood or metal) there will not be enough wood to hold the thread of the screws.If you keep stress to a minimum it should hold. A full length piano hinge would be better, or even a strip of canvas. Spreads the stress. Nigel ____________________ ©Nigel C. Phillips |

Hi Nigel. Thank you for your reply. The fact is, I had a spare pair of hinges already. I understand your reasoning , but my local shop sells “ Piano Hinges “ in a pack of 10 , and I have gone off mail order. As far as the back plates are concerned , I have a supply from “ China” , with my work on fitting Kadee Couplings and replacing the wagon weight with “ Liquid Lead? “ , recycling at its best. Hi Kevin, Sorry, should have read the initial post properly. Three ply. As long as the hinge plates are wide you should be fine. Some small bolts and washers/nuts would be better than screws. Nigel ____________________ ©Nigel C. Phillips |

Hi Matt. This is another reply, All was going well with the end scenery board, that is until it warped , it will still work, but, I am relying on Neodymium magnets to hold the lid. Best wishes. Kevin

Sounds like some bracing wouldn't go amiss Kevin, try posting up a picture and we can try and advise on the best way forward. Hi Petermac. This is a very late reply? Me and Metric, I prefer imperial screw sizes and measurements, and if Brexit ever happens? I would prefer to return to imperial measurements. That aside, the three mil size of a scenic break was actually 6 mil, a bit more solid? Best wishes Kevin
