On another topic, the use of Vista was mentioned with some variances in how it was accepted. I use XP Home & have no problems but my close friend got a new PC with Vista late November. It kept on telling him Updates available but as he was no PC minded, he did not do them. His AVG virus & Spybot software updated OK & about 2 weeks ago, he finally said to me that he has not been able to run Lavasoft for Adaware either. So I tried to scan with Adaware & it died; could not even update the definitions. Windows updates got blocked by its internal firewall even after removing all other add-ons like Spybot, etc. Discussed this with a PC minded modelling colleage & his suggestion was to dump Vista & go back to XP. With the spending of a few dollars. he got his PC cleaned of Vista & XP Home reloaded & all works now as it should, updates from Microsoft , etc without a blink. |

Sorry for your friend, Sol - but as a Mac user (yes, I still have a PC - see other recent post) all those problems are in the past and totally foreign to me. Similar experiences "drove me West", and I am becoming a bit of a computer 'geek.' (My daughter's term ![]() ____________________ Tim. Ex-pat, retired cleric, artist, amongst other things. |

Vista can be areal pain in the proverbial. I have clicked all the inbuilt protection to the off position and loaded in my own choice of protection and then chosen to use the Windows "Classic" interface instead of the Vista one. The machine looks and operates just like my last XP system now.

I won't go any where near Vista, I have XP Pro on two machines and Linux on my third. Ultimately I will use Linux on all my machines. Bye Bye Mi¢ro$oft.

I think Phill that if you ask for XP or any other system, they will load it for you especially if the PC is one built to your specifications like RAM size, hard disc size, etc.
