Hello,this layout started a year or two ago and though its nearly finished, it started as a four foot by one foot layout that was to be stored and erected with fiddle yards to be operated, this was to save space.the initial idea was to show the ends of the last few platforms of a much larger station, the location hadn't been decided and being the locos I had at the time included two 08's, one 31, two 33's, two 35's and a 55 deltic as well as a few GWR steam locos, i wanted a location that could be anywhere. being inspired by the front cover of a 'modern railways' magazine dating form February 1977 which i had acquired at an exhibition with a few others for 50p each a track plan was devised. v  the scenic break on the left hand side was to be a gothic station going over the platforms, and on the right hand side was to be a road bridge, the key builds that were to go along the back scene were to be a post office sorting office and an art deco railway hotel. other buildings hadn't been decided. here are a few photos from the start of the project. in a GWR 1930s ^ When the first photos had been taken the track had been laid and ballast had been laid, the points were operated from behind by brazing rod in channels which had been routed in the layout top, once the rod and junction had been glued in position, the grove was covered over with masking tape ^ the first structure on the layout was an island platform building kit from metcalfe with the small piece of platform which came in the kit. this was detailed with bits and bobs I had. ^ The kit was weathered using a crayon, the people are from hornby, the posters are from scalescenes and came free in a hornby magazine, the pipe along the platform was a piece of wire, the ballast is sorted clean cat litter bought cheaply from tescos years ago ^ this shows the track plan from the bridge end, the bridge was made from parts from a foot bridge kit and plastic I beams, the mail vans shows the location of where the post office is to be build ^ another view along the layout ^ A view at the station showing Bath Abbey, a castle class loco I converted from Hogwarts castle, unluckly the loco is a non runner Kind Regards ____________________ Kind Regards Aaron Kingsmead Station ©Aaron C. The next batch of photos i have were taken some time later. by this point a number of structures had been built.  ^ At the station end the gothic station had been built by using a parish church metcalfe kit, also the art deco railway hotel, the Edenbridge had been built by using a cinema metcalfe kit. This photo shows a class 35 hymek waiting to leave platform 5 while sleeper coach stock is being stored in platform 6  ^ The railway hotels height had to be raised so that it didn't look out of place so it was placed on top of two small stacks of dominoes which i found laying around, additionally on the it can be seen that a signal bow has found its way on top of the retaining wall, this was to added to act as a boiler house to an old industry that had been converted in to apartments. as can be seen class 55 'the fife and forfar yeomanry' is preparing to leave while a class 31 shunts vent vans in the parcel platform.

Looking good Aaron, is your ballast glued down, I see you have some on top of the sleepers, I once had some loose and it got jammed in a motor and caused lots of problems. I like the bits of growth by the track. The Ford Anglia brings back memories of one my dad had, probably the most unreliable car he ever had the misfortune to have owned ! ____________________ Bozzy(never known to pass a pub) |

Hi thereThanks for the kind commentsballast is all glued down using one of the two methods depending on the time of year i'm working on the railway. during the summer a mix of varnish and thinners, this glues solidly in place but gets fumes everywhere so best done outsideduring the winter the 50:50 pva and water with a bit of soap, i've had problems with this method before so i favor the other, the ballast is a bit over sized so it was difficult to get it down between the sleepers, hopefully it hasn't ruined the look, i model to an odd standard, i model to make it look right, but not 100% accurate which dose make some odd looking stuffThe greeny is green foam which is mixed with pva and then stuck down in place kind regards ____________________ Kind Regards Aaron Kingsmead Station ©Aaron C. Hello,By this point it had been realized that with some sorting out, I could get the layout put up on the wall, this would give a total length of 8 feet, meaning that there was the possibility of extending the existing 4 by 1 foot station layout. It was decided that I wanted the whole layout to be visual as the space was limited so the fiddle yard would have to be seen, being the two boards would be separated if I ever came across more space, to make a much large layout, I wanted something i would defiantly need, would look good, and still allow me to operate.additionally the station layout had been made as a through station with platform 5 and 6 being a coach and a half long with platform 3 being two coach lengths long, the original idea for the station was to operate 3 coach trains which would enter the station and then depart though the station using the erect-able fiddle yards. this had to be scratched, the station would become a terminus station for 2 coach trains, but keep the ability to run trains through if the layout was moved and extended. a layout plan was drawn up  also the location of the station had been chosen, this was to be London, this was because of the large variate of the locomotives i had and that i visit London at last once a year to see bands, which meant i could use the time that i waste while waiting for the off peak travel to research, furthermore there was a police box already on the layout and i had been inspired to model a tube station and 3 story housing.
 the next load of photos I have found don't show much apart from the weathering of a GUV in platform 6 and that th railway hotel has had its domino foundations hidden. v Kind Regards ____________________ Kind Regards Aaron Kingsmead Station ©Aaron C. New |

Hello,Not much more until updated to existing progress  ^ A very western view of the station throat, the introduction of the road bridge was to limit the view of the station, by not being able to see the whole train at any point allows the view to imply the train is longer than it really is.  ^ looking down from the second broad, the ballast pile and speed sign hide the two hornby power clips, can you spot the mirror at the end?  ^ a view down platform 4, the mirror really adds more depth to the station.  ^ a view down on to the parcels platform  ^ the mirrors a bit more obvious here.

As promised I'll continue this update so following on from the previous post  ^ The view down towards the station from the depot, the class 31 is a very old hornby model I got at a very low cost at a show, I really like the look of it but it runs like a pig, so I place it in the show siding, which isn't connected to the lines, but is used to show stuff off that doesn't run like this class 31 or Bath Abbey Castle Class. or a few wagons.  ^ The back of the pub, With a little RAF scene taking place  ^ A view across the platforms.  ^ Western Renown at the head of platform 4, the building directly behind is the royal mail sorting office, an ex signal box, this building has since been replaced.  ^ Coaches await there loco in platform 4,  ^ along the bridge over Kingsmead station, looking to what would be Kingsmead high street, this bridge was bashed together in a day, didn't turn out as bad as I thought it would.  ^ and a view from the bridge, those damn air blisters in the retaining wall, any one got some ideas on how to get rid of them? or hide them....I'm thinking of vines or pipes and wires like you see on the retaining walls on the London underground.Might be able to do one more update from past photos then I'll have to find the tripod for the camera, theses photos are from July 2012 and progress has really advanced since. hi Aaron.you might get away with pricking the paper with a pin or perhaps a small cut and soak it with some pva.it might leave a small blemish but you can then use plant life or model drain holes at the top of the wall and have water stains coming down the wall. ____________________ Regards Alan Born beside the mighty GWR. |

Thanks, seemed to be the most logical approach, so by first cutting open the blisters, then opening them with a cocktail stick end, I then fed some prit-stick glue in to the blisters with another cocktail stick, then press the paper back and squeeze the excess glue out, and this is how it looks now  probably will disguise what left with some pipes running down the wall from the gantry thanks for the helpkind regards ____________________ Kind Regards Aaron Kingsmead Station ©Aaron C. Hello,
 ^ work started on the second board by developing the other side of the road at the bridge end of board 1, this was done with another terrace house to mirror the existing one on Board 1  ^ the reason why there is a gap down the center of the side of the building is because i cut it in half while constructing this building as i was thinking of placing the rear to mirror the existing terrace hose and then use the front some where else, but as usual I changed my mindThat's all folks, next update will be of existing progress there will be alot of changes as theses photos are from around early august 2012 Kind Regards ____________________ Kind Regards Aaron Kingsmead Station ©Aaron C. Hello,And now an update on the layouts current state 
 ^ an overall view of board 2 showing the 3 story terrace housing, the depot, Addison Street tube station and Addison Park  ^ Addison Tube station is made from a kingsway kit, A very interesting kit and not for much cost, I decided to build the park because there wasn't much 'greenery' on the layout. the bus is a cheap gift from a tourist shop, i got it on one of my many visits to London, I didn't know what scale the buses where so I took my best guess, this one is a bit too large but can be hidden at the back of the layout.  ^ Addison station  ^ the loco stabling and depot, the water tower still needs to be weathered to show it hasn't been used in a long time and a water crane added.  ^ The loco fueling point, this was built using left overs from the spares box, the roof is from a footbridge, the supports are from a bridge I think, the boxes are covers that you get on plugs on new appliances, the tubes a paper clip and the ladders from a single gantry kit. 
 ^ The postal sorting office has been rebuilt, th plastic single box didn't blend in with the other card kits, the building is waiting on a Royal Mail sign and some plant life or path with fencing.  ^ and how it all blends in. 
 ^ Well that's Kingsmead up to data, new update's will trickle in as time spent on the railway will be restricted as I complete my Civil Engineering degree this year and the final year project requires alot of time to be spent on it.Kind Regards ____________________ Kind Regards Aaron Kingsmead Station ©Aaron C. One thing that always bugs me is the model cars, at normal viewing distance there fine, but when you get up close you notice there's something missing, the driver, so I thought it would make a nice project when i got back in from uni.Out of the 28 vehicles on the layout, 2 already have drivers, 9 are screwed together meaning putting drivers in is quite easy, and the rest are riveted  so I converted the remaining 9 screwed together cars today  ^ so nine cars and nine people including Hornby people, An RAF office, and a German pilot  ^ off with there legs!  ^Put back together with a little weathering waiting to be put on the layoutCan anyone point me in the direction information or give advise on how to take apart the oxford die-cast cars and EFE trucks which are riveted, all i can think of is drilling out the rivets, but i'm not too keen on doing so.  ^ one for the road, I noticed this a few nights ago and thought it looked pretty good, Addison street tube station, the light coming out from inside the building is reflected off the wall by the lamp, gives the sense the buildings got interior lighting Kind Regards ____________________ Kind Regards Aaron Kingsmead Station ©Aaron C. Hello, found some time in the week, so I thought I'd hide the gap down the side of the terrace house on board 2, i had covered it with a wire tree but this didn't hid it well enough, then I saw a method on Much Murkle for greenery and bushes and this reminded me I had some Poly Fiber that I had given to me years back, I had never used it as i was always skeptical of what the results would be like, but seeing how effective it was, I gave it ago   ^I'm very pleased with the results and will be tempted to do this method more often Now for you photo lovers a few more pic of the layout as it is

Nearly finished the retaining wall in the depo, just a small slither left to do, so after some ballasting it now looks something like this. I don't know what to do with the far siding, At the moment there are two ideas floating around1, use the siding as a Loco flue tanker unloading point, this would mean that short workings of fuel trains would come and go from the depo, it would look something like this, this is only a mock up to give a feel of what it would look like.  OR 2, go for a lean to style covered are for light loco repairs and storage. using a roof I have spare and using a number of supporting columns to keep the structure open. another mock up....  any ideas anyone which one I should go for, the shed allows me to store 5 locos in the depo, but the fuel unloading point adds the short train movements.work has also continued further along the line between board 1 and 2 underneath the road bridge.  I finally got round to finishing the retain wall here, now just to add some weathering and greenery ____________________ Kind Regards Aaron Kingsmead Station ©Aaron C. New |
