Another attempt using the iPad. This is the small holding of Miss Rosie, she was a WW2 WRNS at HMS Dipper near Henstridge after de-mob she was given land and assistance, from a sympathetic landowner, to move an old accommodation hut to establish her smallholding. In the early ‘80s she was discovered by the DHSS living without mains services but utterly independent. This is a selection of images of her smallholding. I rather like the nesting box on the rear of the garage and the scarecrow.

Well done Tim (and Miss Rosie), Everything looks spot on with the post from here and I admire Miss Rosie's log pile, looking pretty much like my own. Superb stuff, as usual and inspirational for all modellers. Is the roof of the bird box removable for detailing? People do it with signal boxes, so why not bird boxes? Now, the passenger stock, not many as there are just six trains in total (three SLC and t’other three goods) however a broad view of BR (S) from pre-grouping to early nationalised.
The Maunsell WC 3-car set with Gresley swinger
Ironically, this is my favourite passenger stock, a Bulleid WC 3-car set, since the photo it has been upgraded with Keen corridor connections, metal wheels, etched footsteps and magnetic couplers. It runs without wobbles and for me, at least, is how I remember steam era passenger trains.
Finally, a P+P set is in the wings, not RTR but something rather special.

A few examples of mundane vans, some pre-grouping, example of each of the three main constituents of the Southern, please note finding a Brighton van was a challenge. There are some kit-built amongst the reworked RTRs and all appropriate except the banana van which really should be with the rest of its mates running out of Southampton but it was a product of the late Adrian Swain whom we miss therefore it stays. Finally, the last of the rolling stock for Beaminster Road mostly opens and a couple of odd items. Most are kit built with some quite old kits, the prototypes are all pre-BR with more than few pre-grouping designs. The odd items are the 40t hoppers that can trace their heritage to the LSWR, there are six plus an exLBSCR engineers dept brake van. The lovely bitumen tank is en route to Broad Clyst track depot, it started life as a Slaters kit.

This weekend has been a minor milestone, the Wills/Hornby T9 returned for an extended test run and the layout was ‘reopened’ for business for the first time since the events of 2019. Also tested was the OOWorks L class, a rather impressive large 4-4-0 that really needs extensive running in. There was a certain amount of sadness as the imminent arrival of the P+P in the shape of an elderly Jidenco M7 plus EFE coach set means that one of the others will have to be sold. Unfortunately, the FY is limited to just six roads and they are full, the last train to be built was an anomaly for the layout that is full of pre-grouping stock. Consequently the rake of six 40t ballast hoppers with a special engineering dept. brake will be put up for disposal as soon as the M7 returns from the paint shop after its complete overhaul. That will be the last change of stock, I suppose the long term planning could have been better but it was always an intention to populate Beaminster Road with smaller stock. The future No plans for any further builds except an S11 or L12 that might replace the L class but neither are released yet by PDK. There are no other suitable candidates, a Jubilee or T3 are just out of scope as is anything larger because the D15 is the largest loco allowed on the layout. Instead the layout will simply fulfil its original purpose as a pleasant companion to retirement. Tim

Hi Tim, have you considered modifying one or two of your fiddle yard roads to use cassettes? I have 2x4road fiddle yards one for up lines and the other for down lines, each yard has one road for cassettes. Cassettes can be bought or DIY; I run N gauge and use plastic cable trunking with Peco track, some 00 ones use aluminium angle. On a 36" long cassette I can fit a 6 coach Maunsell set or 5 coach plus a Schools or N15, I have some shorter ones for T9 plus 3 coach set or shorter still for M7 with push pull set, obviously 00 will either need some longer cassettes or less stock per cassette but using 2 or more casstetts for longer trains A plastic storage box for me has 2 trays each holding 5 x 36" cassettes plus another tray with a mixture of shorter trays for single locos or 2 or 3 coach sets A Google search for model railway cassettes should give you some ideas and links to suppliers Cheers MIKE ____________________ Cheers MIKE I'm like my avatar - a local ruin! |

Hi Mike, Take a few minutes to scroll back to my OP which shows the trackplan. The FY is all but hidden by the backscene and almost inaccessible, a major rebuild is almost impossible. A removable loading support could carry the cassette to enable offload directly onto the running line. The connection point and wiring need not be a problem if you look at my solution shown here: Link to Cassettes and later updates dotted around in the following page. There are other unforeseen issues that I should have recognised. The Peco small radius turnouts are unsuitable and cause derailments BUT this is just the start of the investigation into the problem. The answer could be to remove or modify those vehicles prone to derailing, checking and rechecking all B2Bs and bogie control. If replacement of the small turnouts is unavoidable, then it will be a difficult task with the removal of the very permanent scenery divider a major butt-ache even before we can even access the fiddleyard. Sorry but no cassettes, been there and done that, not an option. And let’s repeat the words ‘the six tracks’ were intentional for those with a difficultly in comprehension. There was never an intention to own too much stock, it just happened but selling the excess is a relatively easy matter to resolve compared with the problems caused by my mistake in using small radius turnouts.
