Further to the saga of 60009 U. S.A. She is still In Buckfastleigh workshops.

I don't know about 'smell detectors' but I think the driver could have heard that all was not well. Apparently a lot of people reported that it was clanking a lot as it passed them on the sea wall. Not like a streak to clank a lot. Weather and trains willing (we've got a strike sometime this weekend (over the new Hitachi trains)I'll slip up to Buckfastleigh and see if I can obtain any more info (and pics).

it looks like a quick job,they have left the fire on,, let`s hope so,as for smell you can certainly smell over heating when it occurs ,

Hello Peter  Haven't  been over to see 'le mob' this year,. Our 10 year old grandson here in Cornwall was diagnosed with an incurable brain disease called ALD in March this year.  We stay close at hand to support our daughter. ,

Checked out the 'smell' question and found this on Wikipedia "The locomotive had previously had problems with the big end bearing for the middle cylinder, so the big end was fitted with a "stink bomb" of aniseed  oil which would be released if the bearing overheated. Shortly after  attaining the record speed, the middle big end did overheat and Mallard had to limp onwards to Peterborough."

We had a 'stink bomb' type of warning system when I worked underground. If we had to get out fast Eucalyptus oil was dropped down the intake air shaft. I got round the pit a lot quicker than telephones.

Didn't get over to Buckfastleigh yesterday what with the trains and buses being somewhat overwhelmed with people going to the Dawlish Air Fair and won't be going today as FGW are on strike so no trains. Will try and get over soon. The weather is non to good either, heavy rain and thunder storms forecasted.

Went to the SDR today on my way back from Dawlish Warren. 60009 is still in the workshops waiting for the new wheel bearings which are currently at Crewe so it is likely to be there for a couple of weeks yet.
At Dawlish Warren managed to get a shot of the Torbay Flyer on the Exe Estuary (2 x DRS Class 20's 20308 & 20305). Will put a pic up tomorrow when I've sorted it out and also a selection of shots from 6412 at Totnes.

Here's the Class 20's. Sorry not to the usual standard, it was the other side of the estuary.

They're so useful these photos, track colour, ballast heights, vegetation thickness… Boy it's thick, everything just grows there, such a contrast to my neck of the woods where it's such a struggle for things to grow.

One thing with all that green Marty is that it contains lots of nice bugs and things which helps with the Natural History photos too. Take yesterday for example I managed to get some cracking shots of a 3 inch cricket trespassing on the rails. Will pop it up later tonight.

Great Green Bush Cricket trespassing on the rails at Totnes on the South Devon Railway. This is the female of the species, the long spike under its body is the ovipositer. To get some idea of scale the block behind it is the bottom of a flat bottomed rail chair.

Vegetation alongside tracks is far more abundant these days, unlike steam days when it was kept well under control to reduce fire risk. The present day greenery often causes other problems, for example leaves on the line in autumn especially when wet play can havoc with braking

I agree Mike, something I've learnt by comparing photos from different eras. My trip on the narrow gauge Teifi Valley railway in 2010 started me thinking of modelling vegetation very close to the line, later on, after looking at photos from the 1930s it became apparent that a scorched earth policy was practiced by the maintenance crews along the line.

Nominally the branch is set in the late 30s… Which means I will not have to build as many trees as I once was going to.

Further update on 60009

Whilst out walking alongside the Plym Valley Railway today saw these old sleeper stones from the old Cann Quarry Tramway.





By the way the Plym Valley have a new locomoptive. It's a Sentinel Diesel. Will try and get some pics of it soon.

Further update on 60009. She was in steam yesterday after her repair at Buckfastleigh. All wheels etc on. Not sure when she will leave but I don't think it will be too long now.
