mine are restricted to size by there location, so ignore the way the gates close over the rails.

This is probably outside your time period (1947) but when I was a boy ( I've always wanted to write that) I lived between Southport and Liverpool……..and there were numerous crossings……the principal ones, by the stations, were controlled by an adjacent signal box and  always open for road traffic, only closing just prior to a train passing. The gates when open did span the line but I have to say I dont recall a red circle. There were many unattended level crossings and here one merely opened the gate and either walked  or drove (1970) across ……the gates definitely did not span the double line and from time to time there were near misses or horrific accidents…..it was a busy electrified commuter line with trains each way every 20 minutes.
