More dereliction on a door

Having only ever produced individual derelict building and dioramas of the same, I though I might have a go at a complete layout following the same theme and albeit only 6' 6" long by 2' 9" wide I still managed to get plenty in and, hopefully, captured the typical atmosphere of run down and neglected industry.

It's not quite finished yet, just bits here and there to do and waiting for a few Dapol wagons to arrive then I can put up more pictures later. So, meanwhile, the current scheme of things to date.

Another left to rust gantry crane.

Such things look complicated but are in fact very simple to build. This one took only a couple of hours from start to plonk using Plastruct components , wood dye, talcum powder and green paint.

Ah Allan, you keep excelling.  Very evocative.  Please tell me you've wired it all for operation.

Now then, Sol. I'm sure that once you make up you're mind what you're going to build, you'd get it built in no time. It's all about 10% think, 90% build.

Erm, not quite.  Sounds like there are wires at least so that's a start.  Surely there are people that can give you a hand with the 'lectrics.

No need, John, I was just burning up band width ! ( just joking boss ) It does work and works quite well but the points are changed by hand and self isolate.

The Peco points however can be a bit troublesome and have a built in switch at the tie bar that changes the frog polarity ( though I don't know why it has to ) therefore cannot be hard wired for electrical continuity and just rely on contact at the end of the point blade which is guaranteed to fail miserably so I drop a piece of  loose wire in between the point blades and the the stock rail which seems to do the trick but,no doubt, every member on here bar me could find a more sophisticated solution !

Ah now that's a relief.

I haven't had a chance to get to grips with the Peco points in my possession yet Allan.  I do recall beating my head against the wall with the old Code 100 points that relied on the blade contact against the stock rail for route selection.

I am quite sure there's a way to improve things but I suspect it'll be tricky now that the points are down.  Still if you've got them working best to leave them.

That turnout collection would take a bit of wiring with so many frogs to be switched & indicators  if it was used as part of a "normal" layout.

And true,once I make my mind up about changes, no holding me back,,

Very evocative, I like the remains of the signal box. Someone has stripped the cladding away for some other purpose… firewood or the allotment shed maybe.

 Bored now so I think that's as far as I'm going with this layout so here's the finished shots along with some rolling stock - all the wagons are Dapol, all factory weathered and the little shunting loco is from Ixion, a cracking little performer and flywheel fitted.

What I really need is a GWR Pannier or something to help it out but I'm not going to buy one because I know for sure that I've got one buried somewhere that I haven't seen for years -  come out you little swine wherever you are !!



Anyway, here's the pictures for you to look at while I go rooting for it…

I really shouldn't be telling anyone this but I used scaffold planks for my very  first layout - a disaster if ever there was in N Gauge - where I nailed the track down with carpet tacks hammered between the rails !! Well, I was a builder you know and built it in a converted pig sty - read that as roof raised and weather proofed - where the tin roof blew off in the first gale and I haven't seen it since !

Well Max, I was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer last Monday so I've no idea where it will end up when I'm gone - probably in a skip !
