The whole of my base board is covered in cork tiles, including the elevated sections.  I will not put cork on the gradients as the polystyrene is a very good sound supressor.

I might just pick up on that idea Bob(K). I have a gradient to build and will therefore lay polystyrene tiles on top of the incline before I lay the cork for the ballast base. Good one. :wink:

The cork that I looked at in my local shop had a 45 degree slope on each side to make it look right for the ballasting. Without that the track would be flat with the surroundings. Am I making any sense? or am I LOST! :oops:

Sorry, got the wrong end of the stick.  The cork I think you are talking about is for the road bed.  This provides the sound supression and also gives the effect of a raised ballast bed.  This is the recommended way of laying track. You simply paint the cork and by adding a thin layer of ballast you develop the raised effect.  I chose a different route by covering the whole board with cork and laying the track directly on to it.  My reason for doing so was to do everything I could to achieve the lowest track height, reduce tunnel heights and therefore reduce gradient heights, which on my confined layout are a key issue.  For me every millimetre counts.  I am laying ballast directly on to the board and shaping it to give the impression of a raised bed.

I had intentions of using the incline and the cork to raise the ballast bed. As long as there is no problem in doing that I will proceed with my plans.

Millview House belongs to the Fatkatt family.  Mr Fatkatt owns the Upton Engineering Works, which is located in Upton, near the docks.  The construction of this factory will be my next project.





Mrs Fatkatt, who is a distant relation of Mrs Dapol, is chair of the Middleton Ladies group and today is coffee morning in the parish hall.  She is leaving the house accompanied by her obnoxious daughter Lucy (the vicar's boys nickname for her is Lucifer).  








At the coffee morning she will have an opportunity to meet the Vicar's wife to whom she wishes to have words.  Mrs Fatkatt wishes to discuss vandalism in the Engineering works and nasty Lucy has told her about the vicar's boys antics on White farm with the oil drum - what a sneak :!: .  Convinced the boy's are responsible for the vandalism Mrs Fatkatt intends to give the vicar's wife a piece of her mind!

I agree Jeff, Vicars kids think they are beyond the law at times, think cause their dad is in touch with someone higher up they can do what they like. tut tut.  :D  :D

A major milestone on the Upton to Dunton line is that I have actually installed the backscenes at Middleton station.  They are made from 3ft x 1ft sheets of hardboard, painted blue.  I then cut out scenes from Peco back board sheets and glued them on in layers in an attempt to give some depth.  The height of the ceiling at this point was a restricting factor, however I think it gives the station area a feeling that it is part of the countryside.

I need to put a strip of tape on to conceal one of the joins and paint over it.  I'll do that tomorrow.  Enough for one night :)

A very good effect, Bob(K)!  It's quite amazing how much depth a backdrop can add.

Is that Constable Brown's car I see in the station car park?  And who is the man in the brown coat?

I am afraid not.  That is Mr Fatkatt on his way home and the blue car is a taxi.  Have no fear, Constable Brown is starting to make progress with his enquiries.  However, he is currently supervising the the construction of the new local police station and with Mr Dapol and his relations handling the contract delays are expected. :lol:  :lol:  :lol:

I am impressed with the effect the backscenes give. I have still to reach that stage on my layout, so seeing others install theirs gives me a good idea of what I'm aiming for.
