The first ten years of British Railways is my main interest, but research – which I enjoy as much as the modelling - soon showed how much the infrastructure changed at Colchester in that short ten-year period.

I wanted to include the Colchester steam breakdown crane, which was condemned in 1954, so the infrastructure I’ve modelled roughly to scale, is the quarter mile of railway from the 51 ¾ MP at the end of the down platform to the 52MP by the pond, where the water softening plant sludge was deposited, including the entire loco depot as at c1955.

Hi Paul,

Greetings!

I'm usually late to the party being from "down under" but this time looks like I'm the first of many welcomes as we're a friendly club. It sounds as if you have a lot done already and you're welcome to share. "Members Personal Layouts" is a popular forum where many of us post.

Colin

Thank you for your welcome.
I have tried to load a few photographs, without success, keeps coming up with error code after I hit post. Obviously doing something wrong! Albeit I managed the photo with my name!

  Hi Paul,

When making a post, you will see at the top of the page, the middle option, to ‘ Insert existing photos from Gallery’. Hit this button to select the photo(s) you want to insert into your post.

Oh and a very warm welcome to our friendly part of the web, hope you like it here, as it’s a good place to share ideas and ask questions.

Your personal approach to modelling seems very appealing and I too enjoy the research element.

  Best,

  Bill

At 6'4'', Bill is a tall chap, then again, when horizontal he is rather long and people often used to trip over him! . . . and so a nickname was born :)

Looks marvellous - you will have to start a thread in the personal layouts section and talk us through it.

Hi Paul

Great pictures.  Do start a thread to describe the layout and, for me, details of the signals - marvellous!!

Hi Paul, could you start a new post of your layout in members layouts and post further photos there.

I have started a layout topic, hopefully in the correct place.

I've had a look a some other contributions and hopefully what I've done is ok.

I can do similar on Colchester breakdown train, J68 loco build, signal, and the next are last structure project is the station canopy.

On retiring to Norfolk in 2016, I volunteered on the North Norfolk Railway, and got put to work - one day a week - helping rebuild Julian Birley's Broad Sidlinch Somerset & Dorset 4mm/OO layout.
I contacted Mike Wild of Hornby magazine, to see if he would like an article, and he came and photographed the layout on 1st March this year and the article has appeared in the May issue, which has just been published.

All good fun.

Wow. Just put the two together. Looks fantastic! A testament to all your hard work having Hornby Magazine visit and publish it. You got the front cover as well. Great job.
