The tales of the CC Weathering Services Workbench

Hi All,

I thought I would start a thread detailing the happenings of my weathering. I have recently started a business known as 'CC Weathering Services,' the website can be checked out by clicking on the tab in my signature bar.
The latest project was a HO NSWGR C36 class. A bit challenging to find a reference photograph as they all had a Belpaire firebox and were painted black by the time colour photos of them were around.

I also did my first Respray recently- a GWR 4575 class as we had two of the same model and as we don't have too many GWR Wartime black locos I thought I would paint it into that colour. As can be expected from a first attempt there are a few rough edges but from a normal layout viewing distance they aren't too noticeable.

Before: 5513, the extra was repainted to:

After: 5533, I'm not sure if this loco ever appeared in black but on my layout it will.

Hope you enjoy and there should be more stuff put up in the future.

Regards Connor

Well done Connor - looks great although not as "weathered" as we're used to in UK - but then you have better weather down there !!

Good luck with the new venture.  :thumbs

Cheers Petermac, yes not as weathered but I didn't want to go to hard as it is in the condition as it would have been build (around the late 1920s) when they still kept locos relatively clean. Don't worry our Aussie locos got just as filthy as in the UK in the 60s. Just check out this AD60 class Beyer-Garrett:

Hi Everyone,

Well the weathering has slowed down a bit in the last week due to the weather being rather cold (struggling to push past 13 degrees C) which makes the shed rather uncomfortable. So I have been updating the website in the meantime with some better photos, some of which you have seen posted here. Below are a selection of some of those projects that may have not been sighted.

A Heavy 4F.

A Medium 9F.

A Medium G2A

A Light Hall.

You can now also view the Facebook Page in the signature bar now, check it out if you so desire.

Lots of nice work, Connor.

13 degrees! That's freezing! I will be in Adelaide for a few days next week and am hoping for some warmer weather.

Cheers

Thanks Sol.

As Billy Connolly once said - there is no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothes.

Nice weathering. And nice grass.  Nicely detailed diesel as well. Close up the incongruous feature is that knuckle coupler trip pin. Bit out of scale with the other pipework. Price we pay for magnetic uncoupling.

Thanks Nigel. Yes, the price we pay for magnetic couplings indeed! Still, my opinion is that Kadee's (and their equivelants) are the best form of model railway coupling, both in look and ease of operation (cue coupling debate).

In the meantime, a return to steam with a Victorian Railways J Class:

Seeing the two examples nose to nose certainly shows how your weathering takes away the 'plasticky' look Conner. I've never attempted any weathering but certainly admire the results you and others achieve !  It's a brave modeler who gets several hundred pounds of new loco or rolling stock and starts dirtying it up  :shake:

I just like to think that my stock is running on a preserved line, all shiny and clean  :mutley

Whats next on the bench ?   and, have you had any out and out disasters ? ( come on show us your worst  :thumbs3: )

Cheers

Hi Matt,

It sure does take a bit of bravery to start off with! At some stage you have to jump in!
Next are most lkely some more Australian Diesels.

I've had a couple of annoyances, particulaly a few years ago with British steam locos in relation the excess lubrication that is appied to the model. I'll explain:
I'm not one to take other people's (or my own) loco bodies off unless absolutely necessary, to properly get rid of lubrication residue that makes itself onto bodies you have to wash the bodies with soapy water and in my experience, it doesn't always work if there is still excess on the mechanism/chassis. What I found, particularly with enamel paints like Humbrol and even with acrylic paints (like Tamiya after I switched types) was the weathering job would look great after application and the next few days/weeks but eventually the oil would start to appear throughout the body in unnatural random wavy blotches called tidemarks. Hint: Always store locos (even in boxes) in an upright position to this oil doesn't make it's way to the body. I've found British models (mainly steam) particualrly bad for this but its random.

Q6 tidemark 1.jpg
Notice the marks around the smokebox and the cylinders of this Q6.

The only one out and out disaster, I was half able to fix. Early days I was varnishing my finished models with Humbrol matte varnish (by memory) for protection. The case in point was a Hornby Crosti 9F that I had pretty much exclusively weathered with powders and then varnished. Looked great straight away, came back the next day to find the whole model had gone completely white from the varnish! Needless to say the Airbrush came out fairly quickly to paint over that to create a very heavily weathered loco. Luckily the client was still happy with it. A lesson learnt from that incident, don't use Humbrol Varnish! I also have't weathered anything since exclusively with powders, using the airbrush or other methods in conjuncton.

Here is that loco, I still think it was an ok result:

Hope that provides some insight.
