All forms of couplings

Hey guys,

Recently I have been seeing these new couplings for n gauge, a few things I want to ask really. for starters do these new closer coupling fit on any farish, dapol or peco, loco or rolling stock? Do they make a huge difference as in realistic look and space for rolling stock on your layout? Are they easy to fit? :)

Also is there anyway that using magnets on locos buffers to be another form of coupling for connecting rolling stock together, probably not on the n-gauge as it to small a scale. Probably something for 00, make the buffers magnetic. I know they would have to be opposite polls and there would be snags, but wouldn't it be a possiblity. Especially for spring loaded buffers as this gives it clearance for corners.

Probably a silly idea but it was just a thought.:???:

Cheers Tom

If this is in the wrong part of the forum could it be moved please?

Interesting idea Thomas, but if you connected the wagons by magnets what would happen if you then reversed one of the wagons ? Wouldn't they then be opposite poles and repel instead of attract ?  And how would you de magnetise them to uncouple ?   :hmm

Cheers

The idea of using magnets as couplings already exists. Take a look at Brio. The buffers are rather overscale and there is only one of them but it does work.

Yup I had thought of Brio, but the same problems are there, if you reverse one of the toys..you have one end with two magnets and one end with none. Not saying it wouldn't work, just that it comes with its own set of problems. Mind you it would probably help in clearing any stray bits of metal laying around on your track

The issue of reversing a wagon, or turning it around isn't an issue if you arrange the magnetic couplers like this…

As we know, it is North that is attracted to South. It wouldn't matter if a wagon is turned around as the North pole would be on the same corner everytime, being attracted to the South pole.

The problem I can see with it is going round curves the magnets on the outside of the curve would have to be weak enough to let go otherwise it the whole train will try to go in a straight line.

Sprung magnetic buffers so as you go round the corner the inner ones compressand the out ones open up ?

Tom you will have to give us the name of these new couplers that you have seen before we can give you some opinions.

N scale coupling options other than the standard issue Rapido style are available with differing amounts of complexity and success.

Eventually I hope to change over to the N-scale equivalent of the Kadee coupler by Microtrains

I see couplings as a major PITA right across the board. My suggested solution in the DCC
age is to put a motor in EVERYTHING and drive each at the sames speed…

You won't need pooper scoopers Matt - all the miniature inhabitants from the Metcalfe houses will rush out and scoop it up for their roses …………………:mutley:mutley

Hmm,I guess Kadee types are the best for auto coupling.Of course a shunters pole and 3 link jobs would be authentic practice with sprung buffers on the wagons ?.

To be authentic Derek, you'd also need a very small shunter to handle the pole …………….:roll::cheers
