Silly question time I guess. I'm shortly going to begin the process of ballasting my 00 layout of just over 300ft of code 100 track, thinking of using possibly Javis JFG7 fine grey or the JXG7 extra fine grey, and wondering how much to buy in, as it's available in 3kg/7lb bags. I don't mind having a bit left, as it's always useful for alterations, repairs, wagon loads etc, but don't want to end up with loads more than I need, or run out before I complete. Most members will have already done lots of ballasting but this is my first layout, so my question is how far does it go, feet per lb or whatever?

I model N scale Keith so difficult to say but i have about 80ft and i used two bags.Perhaps start off with two bags and see how far you get.If you get half way you'll have a better idea of how much more you need.

Yes start off with a couple of bags, I have never bothered ballasting behind backscenes, obvious I know but some people do, it's wasteful in my opinion.
