Inset trackwork?

I want to use inset trackwork - where the floor level more or less comes up to rail-top height - in my loco shed.

I have a couple of queries that I'm sure someone here will have an answer to:

What is the best way to inset the tracks? Make a false floor from plastikard or similar material, or use something like plaster or Polyfilla? Or is there a better way?

I have done both ways Perry

The easier of the 2 is the plasticard way very easy to do if you have straight tracks.

I have used Polyfilla on a tram track i am creating due to the fact it has non specific radius curves the plasticard way would be a nightmare.

I use string laid in the inside edge of the rails to create the gap then apply the polyfilla allow it to dry then you pull out the string to create the gap for the wheel flanges then san as neccesary.

I particularly like the idea of using string to retain the flange gap.

At present, the roads will all be straight as they will be in the shed, but the outdoors ones might pick up a bit of curve here and there! I will probably opt for the plastikard floor for the shed and decide on the rest later.

Thanks, Brian

You could also use cork sheet/ floor tile as the ground surface. It's easy to cut, and can be chamfered so it's kept below rail head height ( to aid with cleaning). It also doesn't set like polyfiller, so aids sound reduction.
