Imitation Slate ?

Any Suggestions ?

Just Looking at various scenarios for my proposed small micro 0-16.5 layout  - one of which is to set it around a N Wales slate quarry .

Obvious way of replicating the quarry scene would be to use real slate - however I fear that this would make the whole layout far too heavy and just wondered if anyone had come across a way of replicating slate ?.

I don't know who markets it but there is a product made from chipped tree bark.
This would be suitable for a slate scree when painted.
I'd suggest solid formations could be carved from DAS etc.

Here ya go richard Henrparrot imitation raw slate.

Take one used pot/container used for polyfilla allow to dry completely.

Whack it out of the pot and break up to whatever size you want instant raw slate then paint to desired colour.

That's not as daft as it sounds Brian !!  Painted, it could indeed represent slate.

Are you wanting a slate "face" or slate for wagon loads Richard ?  If the former, then I think I'd cast it from plaster and paint it.

HP  - You are not just a pretty face - thats brilliant and will form the slate scree nicely.

Peter = The idea at the moment is to have a repsentation of a slate quarry with a coulpe of different independent operating levels rather like the Dinorwic Slate Quarry.

:hmm Maybe if you mix the polyfilla with some suitably coloured paint beforehand you won't have to paint it at all other than a bit of dry brushing to give colour variations.

Excuse picture quality - here is that bark stuff I spoke of (used on my 'N' layout).
You might be able to see a 'scree' which, with imagination, could be slate.
