Hi I'm wanting to make a pile of disused rails on my layout do I just use any old or broken tracks I have laid about and cut the rails for the desired length and paint them so to look rusty. ;-)

That's about the size of it mate,

Very simple and very easy to replicate.

If you have a look at the U-Tube links I posted about the Llangollen and South Devon Preservation Railways you will see heaps of what you are trying to achieve lying not only beside the main line but also on top of the sleepers inside the mainline tracks. Really helps when you see things in real life.

Lengths of "new" track can also be placed along the side of the mainline to replicate new track ready to replace old sections of the mainline.

BTW:

If you do place track between the rails on the Mainline, Branch etc,

Make sure they are "glued down" as not to interfere with the running gear or couplers etc on your engines or rolling stock, and

So they don't move around to cause short outs if they move and touch the rails on the Mainline, Branch etc,

Old brass rail, preferably from a well used piece of track at a swap meet. For trct (that rivet counter touch) drill some holes in the webbing at the ends. Brass track is also useful for disused sidings.
