Wasn't quite sure where to put this because it's not a model railway at all but it is an inspiring piece of work and for those of you who think they may never have the room for a working layout then this type of thing would be a very satisfactory substitution I would think. It also tells us a lot about our own modelling and our approach to it.

That's a wonderful "watch it take shape" link Bob.

I love that kind of site where you can see exactly what's been done and how.

Highly detailed planning like this is an interesting approach which many of our top modellers have advocated in books and articles on scenery.

I must confess to being less structured, as my plans are broader and more general (but at least they do exist).

One thing that's mentioned and I now find indispensible, is the use of a camera to record my "worK in progress". It's so much easier to see the good and the bad when photographs are studied and not the "live" model.

An even better way (which I use for my paintings) is to hold your model in front of a (largish) mirror and anything that's not quite right will be immediately apparant.

Spot-on, Ken. I don't know a single artist who can get by without one. Great for checking symmetry and uprights etc.

Why should that be then Mike? How come a mirror is better than a straight forward look at the model? Are we missing something relying on eye to model contact?

All to do with the weird workings of the brain, Bob.  I've seen plenty of misshapen vases etc in still-lifes. Had the painter used a mirror, the faults would've been obvious.

I like the idea of producing most of the buildings before the rest of the layout. Nothing worst than having to cut holes or leaving space in the scenery. This looks a cracking project!

Just in case any of you didn't click on the link while you were looking at Knott's Landing you must have a look at the workbench of this modeller. I promise it is worth a couple of minutes of your time.

I'm just wondering how on earth I'm going to be able to pick up my layout to see it in the mirror

Looking into that website, I thought when I saw some names, I recognised them - sure enough - Aussies & the owner, Mario is from Victoria & a NMRA member to boot.
I saw Mario in a clinic about his foam rocks - frocks & he did a first clsss job with them.

Those foam rocks are definitely for me in the future. They have everything in their favour, cheap, light, easy, realistic, couldn't ask for more.

That guy's a genius !!

My workbench is currently a table which has to be cleared away at least twice a day - maybe that's why I don't spend much time modelling !!  The layout (or what there is of it so far) is still in the garage - much to SWMBO's annoyance because her car lives outside !!!  But then so does mine I keep telling her but hers is a soft-top so it ought to be inside in winter.  It (the layout) will be moved into the attic over the next few days if I get time - then I can use the garage for my workbench !!!!!!
