My wife bought me a tub of chinchila dust yesterday as Lawrence had mentioned it was a good size for N Gauge as many of the commercial sold ballasts are overscale

I must say the size does look about right for the scale the colour i have got is very granite looking grey with bits af black i dont know if chinchilla dust comes in differant colours or not.

£2.99 for a 2 litre plastic milk container of it which is very cheap compared to commercial bought ballast.

Lawrence what way did you find best for laying and glueing it as it is small i wondered if a dropper method may disperse it to much ?

Somehow I totally missed this  but as yet I haven't actually ballasted any track using the chinchilla sand, I have used it as ground cover just sprinkled onto watered down pva, stuff sets like stone

There are a few good suggestions to look into in the above posts, Thanks everyone. Sure will be a lot cheaper than buying mini packets of so called ballast.

Regards,

Derek.

Mmmm, do they dry the chinchillas before they grind them into dust?
