For those who want to wire droppers to the outside or inside web there is now a prototype.

I believe it's train detection equipment (it counts the wheels/axles apparently), the wires go to a yellow junction box under the platform edge. Essentially an occupancy detector, as long as the axle count equals the train total it's all good. This is heavily used track (one passenger train every 5-10 minutes plus freights).

Thanks for the information. Any idea of where there would be some pictures?

Plenty on the web, used for all sorts of things from train occupancy to speed determination. " Treadle + Railway".
