Adding a corridor to Triang Clerestory Coaches

Hi All. I have a plan to cut and shut some “ donated Clerestory coaches “ ,it does involve a bit of butchery, and I would like to fit corridors. Are there any corridors sold as spare parts? Or do I have to cut up styrene sheets to fit, which does sound like a bit of a PITA. Not the carriage flexible connections, they can wait. My original plan was London South Western Railway Coaches, but, I have been put in my place, as they don’t have the same panelling.   Best wishes Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Cardboard painted with water colours will be fine for corridor partitions. The old non-corridor Triang clerestorys however, are a scale 8 feet wide and obviously have doors to all compartments on both sides, so they don't represent corridor stock that well and would need a great deal of butchery, even if you accept the narrow width and no corridor connections.

The later longer and wider Hornby clerestorys however, are all corridor stock, which may prove an easier starting point. However, if you need to repaint them to non-GWR livery, you may loose the painted on panelling.

There's a section on modifying the old Triang stock at Triang Clerestories which you may find of interest, as these old panelled coaches can provide some useful alternatives, close enough for certain diagrams.

Have fun,

Bill

At 6'4'', Bill is a tall chap, then again, when horizontal he is rather long and people often used to trip over him! . . . and so a nickname was born :)
