Decoder fitting

Hi All    I have just purchased a new Bachmann loco , after giving it countless runs up and down a plank I had enough ( true I could have followed the suggestion and made up a circle of track) . Anyway I now had the Decoder and I wanted to fit it. I had taken the shell off the chassis, removed the blanking plate. The E-Z Command 90degree?6pin DCC Decoder  was recommended for the 64xx Class 0-6-0  Pannier tank Loco.                                                   Fit Decoder , screw in the screws, and away, nothing , check all okay with the Powercab, nothing, back to the "work tray" sitting there was the blessed Decoder , start again, but this time I saw the blessed Decoder do a bunk, eventually I did manage to fit the Decoder and get the loco running. Perhaps I will get a circle of track
( With a Large Radius) for future "Running In". But this blessed Decoder , as per Bachmann recommending another Decoder for another Loco I think I had better ask YMRC Forum    All the best. Kevin

Hi Ed.  Thank you for your reply. The trouble being it went in, but  it was loose, and because it at ninety  degrees, in other words "RRR about face" gravity got the better of it. And that is why in future I am going to seek advice about fitting a Decoder in to a Loco , I recently was put off buying a Peckett for that reason. All the best. Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Just had a look at the chassis design of the 64xx. I think I would have got rid of all that RF gubbins and used a wired 6-pin decoder.(Actually I would probably have ripped the whole lot out and hard-wired an 8-socket wiring harness).

It shouldn't be loose. Those pins are supposed to be a tight friction fit in the sockets.

Hi Nigel. Thank you for your reply. I totally agree with your comments , and "If" I had the confidence , the idea and the experience of doing such a job? Then most likely I would have done so. But such is life. The fact of the matter is that it is only the bodyshell holding the Decoder in position . Maybe it is a cunning plan by Bachmann to rule the world"model railway world" that is.   All the best. Kevin

Hi Ed.  I have just received an email from Herr Proudman at Bachmann , regarding my difficulty with fitting the Decoder into my new 64xx loco, he said that the Decoder as supplied is meant for an N gauge loco. All the best. Kevin

Hi Kevin,

You need a horizontal 6 pin N-scale decoder, not a right-angle one.

Hi Nigel.  I received the paid postage label, 1st post the following day, made haste to the post office with my small package in my hand( which reminds me, the package they sent the Decoder in, to me was big enough for a OO carriage or Diesel loco) got the receipt. But being a Bank Holiday Weekend who knows when it will turn up or even how humongous the package will be.  All the best. Kevin

Hi Nigel.  And any interested parties Update on fitting the correct Decoder, arrived today, I am in receipt of the correct Decoder for my new 64xx and it remains in position, no drooping or dropping out, a good tight fit. Anyway I have had the loco running to and fro, but silly me I have forgot how to change the code to the cab side number 6422. it works fine on number 3, I have been reading the NCE Powercab manual and I cannot make it out.  Would someone please tell what to do.   Kevin

From the manual
Page 46 Using programming track  then option 1, work your way through that part until you get to address on page 48.

Sometimes you need someone to show you physically

Hi Ron.  Thank you for your reply. I have just referred to the video. The thing is it is like riding a bike? But the last time I rode a bike, I ended up in hospital . And I have done this before and it worked fine it must be me. And now that I have the correct Decoder (Zimo 36-568 NEM 651 Loco Decoder) everything should be okay. All the best. Kevin

Hi Ron.   I followed your advice, and I went astray ? Somewhere along the line. It all started okay, I was sitting there(And considering that it is not my first Loco) with the video playing, and the manual in front of me. Loco on the track,
Powercab at the ready following the instructions , but then my Powercab screen read different from that on the video.
What had gone wrong? I asked myself, was it my button finger? Or what? :???: try an already set Loco ? That works fine try again still the same, I will have another go soon.  All the best. Kevin

Hi Ron.  Thank you again. When I followed the instructions , I reached the "Programme Short Address", without a problem. But my understanding went awry when I "Programmed the Long Address"  or should I say Tried to"      .           It maybe easier to leave that Loco at No 3 .   All the best. Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Avoid any confusion and select "no" (enter) when asked to select the short address, "yes" (1) when asked to select the long address. That video is a bit misleading as not all operating systems have the same short number capacity (and it should be 127 or less anyway) or long number capacity. I avoid short addresses at all times and use 3 or 4 numbers in the long address, as I have to switch between NCE and Digitrax systems.

See https://sites.google.com/site/markgurries/home/technical-discussions/decoder-addressing/address-confusion for the differences.

As usual, if in doubt read the manual.

Hi Nigel. Thank you for your reply. I was almost pulling my hair out ( and I haven't got much left) in frustration.I couldn't make it out, as it isn't the first Loco. But it seemed like it was. The Decoder is a Zimo and supplied by Bachmann . At the moment I have been spending my time "Retro Wiring" the four DPDT slide switches for my manual mimic panel, it would have been so much easier if I thought of the panel before fitting the switches.

Hi Nigel.  Whilst the woodwork adhesive is drying on another project, I thought that I better have another try at programming my latest loco 64xx, I took your advice on the the address and pressed "Enter", but instead of the "4 digit spaces" coming up, there was a whole lot of optoions that I didn't quite understand . I don't know anything about setting the "Locomotive Volts" and the rest. So I left it and turned to Your good self and YMRC
All the best. Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Here we go then.

If the locomotive still has the factory ID (3) you will see this on the programming track:

Press Prog/Esc (4 times)

Until this screen comes up.

Press enter. This screen comes up. We want 1 - STD.

Press 1 and the two following screens come up. First is the decoder manufacturer (101 - Bachmann Trains), press Enter and the second screen is the decoder version.

Press Enter, and now we're down to business.

Press 1. This then comes up:

Press Enter. This then comes up:

Press Enter (in other words don't activate the Short Address). The next screen is where we want to be:

Type in the number you want - ignore the 003, it will be over-written. In my case I want 0050.

Press enter. The next screen comes up:

Press 1 to activate long the address. The next screen comes up:

Enter No. Do not press 1 unless you want to alter the way the locomotive runs*, which means reading the decoder manual. Then press Prog/Esc a few times and press the Select Loco button. I will see 050. And away we go.

My 40 tonner only gets going at setting 20, so I will adjust this with the Start Voltage setting until it starts to trundle along at setting 1. Plus add some momentum and decleration so there is a slight delay in starting and in stopping. Just like the real thing.

All this is in the manual that came with the unit. Pages 46 on. NCE is pretty forgiving, if in doubt just keep pressing Prog/Esc. NCE also recommends that you keep the short address as 3 and the long address as what you want it to be.

Nigel

*You pressed 1 instead of enter when you started seeing things like Start Voltage.

Save
