Embryonic layout in need of an identity.

Layouts without names tend to proliferate in our world. I can't keep calling my latest project 'The Layout' and unlike humans that one is unaware of their given name, they do not respond well to being called 'Mate'

The layout is an On30 logging 'depot' - if that is the right word - initial details can be found HERE.

Now I know this is going to sound a bit soppy, but I would like to use the word 'Smokie' in the name after our much missed moggie who died sooner than he should.

Smokie 2001 - 2012

Any ideas? Suggestions would be most welcome.

Once I have a name for the layout I will start a thread in the layouts forum.

Thanks!
Ralph ;-)

Being an American based layout, why not something like 'The SRLL' - The Smokie River Logging Line, 'SMLRR' - Smokie Mountains Logging Railroad, 'SMRR' - Smokie Mountain Railroad, STRR - Smokie Timbers Railroad, 'SVRR' - Smokie-Vale Railroad…

Cheers, Gary.

ps, My family had a cat identical to your Smokie when I was a youngster. It too died before its days. She also was known as Smokey. Sorry about your loss. Our pets are a big part of our families.

Hi Ralph, as carry on from the suggestions by Gary and John B. How about the Smokie Ridge Logging Line or Smokie Ridge Railroad?

Always try to look on the bright side of life!

I think the suggestion of Smokie Mountain sounds right for an old logging line.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I must admit, the abbreviation of the name had not occurred  to me… I like the look of the ampersand in a string of letters. I also like the word 'Ridge'.  So far with your help I have come up with this:

Smokie Ridge & ______ Timber Co.

'Smokie Ridge being where the trees are - maybe? and the 'blank' being where the lie is established?

Any thoughts of filling the blank? Nothing is set in stone (or sign-written) yet so I am still interested in anything you can add. I am settled on ampersand, 'Ridge' and 'Smokie' so we are getting there. The 'Timber Co' is still up for debate.

Thanks !

Just occured to me that the Americans call 'timber', lumber !

What about 'SRL&LCo' - "Smokie Ridge Logging and Lumber Company'…

Cheers, Gary.

As I understand it, in the USA standing wood is 'Timber' and processed wood is 'Lumber' where as here in the UK we do not have a distinction and both are referred to as 'Timber'

I could be wrong…

That aside, I like the name and that would be correct if they have a sawmill - converting Timber into Lumber?

I am not 100% on this. The word 'Lumber' is certainly applied to the finished product but at which point it changes from 'Timber' to 'Lumber' I am not sure. I think it becomes 'Lumber' when the tree becomes horizontal…

… Is that correct?

EDIT: Just found this:

http://www.differencebetween.net/object/difference-between-lumber-and-timber/

Sort of explains it…

Smokie Ridge & ______ Timber Co.

Smokie Ridge & Catimba Railroad………sounds a bit Red Indian?

Nice idea Doug, and it does sound Native American, but Catimba is in fact a Brazilian football strategy!

Nah, Don't like the 'Smokie Ridge & Oh Poo Timber Co.'

I am not sure about all this PC lark - who decided that Red Indians and Eskimos should be called something different anyway? If they did, fine, but I expect is was someone else…

I was just being a smart-arse

…Sorry!

Ha! Ha!

I didn't type "smart-backside" in my previous post. The obscenities filter is obviously more sensitive than the PC filter!

That is just hilarious
