Not that impressed

As a "toy train" and children's attraction, it's probably very good.  As a "model railway", the earlier comments (from modellers about another model), are quite valid.

Don't forget, it was a Daily Mail article :hmm

(well Mail Online, same thing)

Whilst on the subject of York does anyone remember a large 0 gauge layout that used to be located in an old wherehouse somewhere down by the riverside?

I remember going there with a couple of school mates in the early 80s when we used to go spotting at York station.

Busy building a new show layout …..

I do Dave - in one of the riverside warehouses I think.  Long gone now alas ……………

I seem to think it was York Model Railway Society who built it - either them or the railway employees themselves when York had the carriage and wagon works on Poppleton Road.

I've just had a look at the photos.  For a 'train set' it's quite impressive.  But it is not a model railway, capable of being run as the real thing.  Personally, I wouldn't go to see it, or any other similar 'train set' posing as a model railway.  But each to his own.

If the following gets off the ground, then you will be looking at model railways:

Does anyone know what happened to the Miller's Dale layout that used to be in Slater's shop at Matlock Bath some years ago. That was a railway.

I'm old, that's why I'm allowed to change my mind, when I can find it.

That's probably why genuine "model shops" are now few and far between.  "Our" shops simply don't cater for the masses and there are not enough of us to keep many such "specialist" shops going - particularly with internet shopping available to us all.
You're right there Peter. You should come down under to see how many decent 'specialist' shops there are in Sydney. I'm sure you could count them all on one hand and that is excluding your thumb… I can tell you that there is really one shop that Gormo and I use that really specialise in UK railways… The rest are either a general mix or specifically Australian prototype.

Cheers, Gary.

Not my cup of tea either, but, as has been said, each to his own. Given the amount of track and plonk down buildings that the guy has used it must have cost a fortune to build. However, it might inspire some young people to to start building a layout, which must be good for us all.

I was wondering that Alan.  He's no spring chicken.  I can't imagine his missus dragging that lot out of his shed!
