Bolts

Hi again-hope I'm not becoming too big a pain in the —- I am now commencing the building of the "glass" passenger lift using plastruct sections for the main structural frame.

Question is rather than making all joints appear as "welded" ones I'd like to build it using bolts and haven't a clue how to do that-any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks again
Regards

Ian, most certainly not a PITA !!! This club is for asking questions as well as showing your work.  It's a world wide reference work for information about qanything to do with model railways. :thumbs

You say you want to use "bolts" - what about rivets instead ?

Is this 4mm scale ?  If so, bolt heads would be hard to see in any detail although there would be a "mark" where they are.  You can actually buy sheets of styrene "rivets" - I really have no idea how these would be cut out but there you are.

A good system of making rivets is to use a tiny blob of glue as the rounded rivet head and, once everything is assembled, dry brush the rows of rivets to highlight them - works well.

Yet another method - for sheet material is to punch an indent on the reverse side before assembly then dry brush once again.

I have seen bolt heads punched out of card, but not at this scale………….

Here's what I mean made by a modelling friend of mine in UK - all done in card !!! :

Hi Peter- Amazing how you immediately correctly read my 4 dashes-could have been so many other derogatory words.
I would like to show bolts rather than rivets given the era of the model(80-Noughties).The illustration of your friends work in card, you provided, is absolutely amazing.
I'm looking for say a length of 0.66mm in hex section plastic to cut into 0.5 mm slices.
Don't really know if I'm being unrealistic in my expectations or not!
Thanks again for your kind interest

Hi Again-Feel a bit of a tw–. Just seen that Plastruct supply a 0.80 mm hex section which is as close as I need for my bolts. Now only to find a way of properly "slicing" it in say 0.5mm.
Thanks for all your help.

That's one heck of a piece of card modelling Peter. I can't imagine how he has achieved that.

He wouldn't necessarily have to be a forum man he could look on it as an educational exercise and his membership would be coincidental. Or he could do an exercise in his word processor and perhaps e-mail it to you and you could then add it here as an attachment. With appropriate recognition of course.

There is this tool for creating hex bolt heads : PHDesigns

You melt plastic sprue into the mould shapes, then trim.

Sorry for hijacking, but I can't find the start of this story.

I've been meaning to read it from the beginning, but I can't find the start.

I promise I'll delete these posts once somebody points me in the right direction.

Cheers

I'm afraid Ian's topic has been well and truly hi-jacked Max, post number 1 is all there is really. Many apologies to Ian as I started the whole hi-jack off.

Oh.  I thought I remembered him talking about it elsewhere, Bob.

I must be like the grave diggers wandering around in the Cemetery.

I've lost the plot. - Again.  :mutley
