Newport to Geelong North is approx. 60 km and Geelong North to Ballarat is approx. 85 km. The train was a transfer of rolling stock from Steamrail's depot in Newport. Late May steam trains will run one hour shuttle services out of Ballarat. I am sure one loco could have hauled the train, but three (or at least two) are needed for the Ballarat trains. By the way the line from Geelong to Ballarat is only used for freight trains, so it was a great opportunity to travel on the route as a passenger. People in the hundreds also turned up along the railway to get perhaps one in a lifetime photos of three working steam locomotives. It appears to be birthday time so a Happy Birthday to anyone who might be thinking of having one soon ….. :cheers :cheers :cheers
I wouldn't have wanted to stoke those locos Claus - how far is it from Newport to Ballarat and why 3 locos - are there some steep grades or are you very heavy ? :hmm
Cheers,
Claus
