The "new" Hornby terrier was announced Jan 19, 10 months after the initial Rails announcement (Mar 18).

Given the first Hornby Models then came out as part of the 2019 range they must have been accelerated in development once the Rails plans came out.  Hornby executed a similar pre-emptive move previously with their new King when Hattons / DJM announced their plans, so well done in fact that the DJM never got beyond a dream. They had the playbook and just dusted it off for the Terrier.

The New Terrier was generally well received, except by purists who found some minor defects and remain waiting for some of the Rails versions.

So, Hornby have sucessfully pushed back against both of the upstart Retailers while Bachmann chug along much as usual. Bound to ruffle a few feathers.

Perhaps the true story will emerge at the 150th Hornby celebrations when they unveil a brand new range with - shock horror - a totally retooled 48xx Class and a 57xx without top-feed because they heard Bachmann finally have both of them in development!  

Unfortunately the Rails Terrier also has some errors, the most noticeable being that the coal rails on the bunker are mounted on the inside of the bunker, not in line with the edges of same.  This is a strange error to make given that Dapol got it right on their  O Gauge model.

Upstart retailers? Hmm. So anybody who rocks the cozy market arrangement of the two major players gets penalized? Meanwhile the punters (that's us) get to put up or deal with never-ending design and manufacturing errors.

don't get me wrong; I'm all in favour of what Hattons and Rails have done and continue to do, e.g. 4 and 6 wheel coaches. I was just commenting on Hornby's commercial response ("upstart" is from their POV not mine!)
