Hornby idea of removing the weight from the boiler

Hi Petermac.  Thank you for your reply. The fact is that Hornby couldn’t answer my question because their staff were off sick or whatever. I was asking, obviously I don’t want a Hornby decoder, I just wanted to know how many pins the Loco had. Once that was sorted I was going to ask the YMRC forum about a sound decoder and speaker, if possible in such a small Loco. Sending for the stuff that I received for the scenery as opposed to seeing what one is purchasing is another question. Getting to the post office is another hurdle in my way, as I am still unsteady, having good family and neighbours to purchase food is one thing because I have got to eat, the luxury of a personal courier between home and the aforementioned post office is something else , above the call of duty. Best wishes Kevin

Kevin, I fear that this thread may be a repeat of one or more of the 323 previous threads you have started, several which refer to equipping the Terrier with DCC capability, with or without sound. I’ve even seen a thread giving the details of the decoder you purchased for the job. Why not transfer any further conversation to this thread http://yourmodelrailway.net/view_topic.php?id=16061&forum_id=17 having first read it all again to bring you up to speed? It may save everyone a lot of time.

Hopefully to save yourself further hassle, you might consider getting a specialist to carry out your Terrier conversion for you. This may be the best route to get it operating without getting yourself bogged down with electronics.

Please remember that the pandemic is not going to just end any time soon, despite what everyone would like the reality to be. The nature of the pandemic will change, just like the virus itself changes and while everyone will need to adapt their lifestyles as best they can, us mature folk need to hunker down and be safe and content with occupying ourselves as best we can. Having said that, I hope you get your vaccination soon, as it will provide you with more protection.

In the meantime, you may want to fully run-in the Terrier in advance of the DCC conversion, as if it doesn’t run well on DC, it will never run really well for you on DCC.

  Good luck,

  Bill

Hi Bill. Thank you for your reply.  I understand what you are saying. I did add it to my “ Inglenook junction thread “ There is a confusing Rails of Sheffield advert that mentions speaker and decoder for the Dapol version and I phoned them, but, they explained that it was only the Dapol which had the space for the speaker. Best wishes Kevin

I agree that there is confusion here, but not with Rails of Sheffield.

You have discussed installing a decoder in your existing Terrier, which may be the older Hornby version which requires a decoder to be hard wired. I understand that this loco is tucked away in its box somewhere and that you have a decoder for it, all as described in the thread highlighted in post 4 above.

You have also discussed the Dapol Terrier, the new all singing and dancing Hornby Terrier and now the Rails of Sheffield Terrier.

Now the confusion can be revealed. Which Terrier are you talking about and what DCC configuration are you after?

Hi Nigel.   Thank you for your message. I had the Terrier out, but, never put it back into the box. As It happens the previous discussion went back until April 2019, now this time I understand it , if there is enough space in the Dapol Terrier, but, not the Hornby version does that mean that the bodyshell of the Dapol is bigger than the Hornby one to accommodate the speaker?   Best wishes Kevin

Hi Ron.  Nice to hear from you. No, I didn’t, but, I wouldn’t want to push my luck. I wouldn’t mind paying anyone to do such a job, come to think of it but everyone seems to have their doubts. Best wishes Kevin

Hi Bill.    I have just read the answer on my terrier/DCC question from the Hornby expert, he said this is a bit “ Tricky “.He had asked me for the R number (R3467) because that Loco doesn’t have a DCC socket. Best wishes Kevin

Kevin, you have limited to no experiance in hard wiring a decoder in so I would seriously consider paying someone else to supply, and fit your trerrier sound decoder. Putting it bluntly Its a heck of a lot of money to 'blow' through lack of experience. If you want to start out/ get some practice hard wiring decoders, get a cheap diesel loco with plenty of room, a cheap decoder ( laise dcc are cheap as chips and ok to practice with). And have a go with that. If you want some help finding someone to do your Terrier several on here have used postal services to get it done and will happily recomend some suppliers, fitters
Cheers

Well that rules Hornby out then Kevin, they are the manufacturer and will supply DCC fitted if thats what you order, BUT if you buy DCC ready then they probably expect you to contact your LOCAL specialist dealer to obtain a decoder or get one fitted. There are plenty of shops out there that will advise you on which decoder will fit YOUR Terrier. Just ask here for recomendations and other members will chip in with shops THEY have used and probably WHICH decoder to use even
But you need to make your mind up. . Do you just want to fit a standard  Decoder or do you want to fit or GET fitted, a Sound decoder ( along with speaker) two questions that will get you ENTIRELY different answers but nobody can advise you successfully until YOU decide what you ACTUALLY want ?

Cheers

If it is of any help, I just trawled Google for a quick answer and ended up on Hatton's website: R3467 is shown as "DCC compatible but no socket". It does appear to be the older, now superseded model. I have hard-wired three of these (two original Dapol and one Hornby). They are a little tricky because there are at least two sets of wires from the pickups on each side, but other than that, the wiring is straight-forward, but there is not a lot of space for a decoder or the extra wires, and certainly not much spare for a speaker.

It can be done but I would echo the advice offered above: practice with a cheap decoder first, before accidentally blowing up an expensive sound decoder, or pay someone to do it all for you, or buy a newer model that is already DCC-ready and has provision for a speaker.

So thats where the confusion is coming from Kevin, Your leaflet is saying DCC ready but both Hornby and Hattons ( via Jeff's post) are saying DCC compatible. DCC compatible means that it CAN  be converted to reliably run on DCC,

My suggestion would be to re read the leflet and make sure it says DCC ready. Not DCC compatible, then see how you get the top off etc to see if it IS DCC ready or needs a socket, or chip hard wired in ?   THEN come back here one we KNOW what the heck we are talking about ?  :thumbs

Cheers

Hi Jeff. And Matt  I hope that you don’t mind sharing this reply. Thank you very much for your replies. A few years ago when I used to scroll through the many pages of EBay I purchased half a dozen Hornby 0-4-0’s with the idea of DCC ing them. I even got as far as removing the bodyshell from one, but, that is as far as I got.                                         Now in 2021 , the line from the Hornby leaflet, and I wrote down “ Verbatim “ for want of a better word?
DCC Ready Contact your specialist dealer for advice.      Best wishes Kevin

Well if it SAYS DCC ready then it SHOULD have a socket in it.  The only way to know for sure Kevin is to open it up and SEE whats inside.
I dont know anything about the Hornby Terrier but its possible that yours could  have been made during a crossover period when they went from non DCC to DCC ready ?  Unfortunately I dropped me Crystal Ball and its gone all cloudy, and its a blurry long way from Linlithgow to London To have a quick look !    So your gonna have to help us out here a bit bud

Can you find the original Service sheet that came with it ? ( One that DEFINITELY came with that Terrier)

Does that service sheet have an exploded diagram ?

If so can you see a DCC socket shown on that diagram ?

If not, the only way is to open it up and take a look

Keep at it  :thumbs

Cheers

Hi Kevin as per Bills suggestion above, and for continuities sake I have merged these two topics. And left them under ' More practical help/ everything Hornby'. As the contents are more relevant to Hornby than small layouts/ planks ?

( And as suggested, worth re reading the whole thing from the beginning to refresh your memory  :thumbs)

Give it time to work Kevin, hopefully you will soon feel better. Had the Flu Jab for the first time end of last year, aparently I became eligible !  Still waiting for Covid Jab and still in full lockdown up here. Wee Nicola stamped her foot and put a stop to just about EVERYTHING.  Hopefully soon though
Cheers

Hi Kevin I have finally got an Answer from Hornby Technical about your Terrier.   They say your Hornby Terrier R3467 IS DCC ready, it just needs the blanking plate removed and a chip fitted

They recommend An R8249 which is an 8 pin 4 function Decoder, available on thier site ( and from Hattons at £16)

If you want to fit sound that is a whole different ball game but at least now we know what we are dealing with

The Service sheet can be downloaded throm that link
Although it doesn't specifically mention your R number the 216j sheet is the one for your model

HTH

Cheers
