OO gauge layout - 1930's LMS based in North West England

No problem - they have a very good range of items. I also find Severn Models excellent for detailed etched brass parts and York Modelmaking for scratchbuilding items (windows, doors, valances, roof tiles etc). The roof tiles, round windows and ridge tiles came from York Modelmaking.

Thank you Ted. The church is OO gauge Scalescenes printed at 75% (3mm/ft) to create a bit of perspective as it sits at the rear of the layout.

Here are a couple of more pics from around the layout - areas left to work on and adding more detail as I go around.
Scratchbuilt Goods Shed - my favourite building on the layout! Still work to do on the yard, crane, vehicles etc and I have now added some exterior lamps in the yard.



Scratchbuilt engine shed and water towe with PD marsh MR water crane and Peco coal stage. Working on completing the cameo with engine shed workers cleaning a loco.



My very first scratchbuilt house and greenhouse. Complete with gardener in the veggie patch. This pic was taken a while ago and I have added more detail around the river and blended the stone walls in better. The stone walls were from Ebay!



Below is a scratchbuilt model of my local with a few minor adjustments. I called it "The Duchess". Windows are from LCut Creative. The structure is 5mm foamboard covered in PVA/Polyfilla mix to give a whitewashed/rendered effect.

Here a few more shots from around the layout, after I had got the interior/streetlights working and added more detail to the layout. Had a great operating session as well and after servicing a few loco's with a drop of oil and cleaner, they are running superbly.

I haven't posted for some time now but here is what I have been up to;


1. Converted to DCC - Purchased Roco z21 Start from Ipswich Model Rail Centre with handheld Multimaus handset and Wi-Fi router to work with my Samsung tablet - £145 brand new!!.

2. Fitted chips to 8 DCC ready Loco's using both Hornby and Gaugemaster decoders (prefer Gaugemaster)

3. Converted my first non-DCC loco to DCC. Old Bachmann Jubilee split-chassis - that was a challenge!!!

4. Modified/detailed my Bachmann Jubilee, Hornby Patriot and Hornby Black 5 - still lots of work to do.

5. Found 3 x DCC30 Accessory decoders for my point work on Ebay for £20. As they are £60 each new, I was very chuffed at the bargain!!

6. Ripped up the back left corner of the layout as the curve was far too tight and my fiddle yard was too short/not enough lanes. Currently in the process of relaying the fiddle yard so I will have 6 lanes, running from 6ft down to 3ft long enabling me to have a good variety of train sizes. Replacing all of the Code 100 track in the fiddle yard with Code 75 electrofrog. As I am surface mounting the points, I purchased 12 Gaugemaster DCC80 Autofrogs (not able to fit Peco accessory switches - PL-13's or PL-15 micro-switches). Will let you know how I get on, especially as I have a double slip in the fiddle yard!


No pictures yet, but will try to get some over the next week or so!

Hi Ian,
          I've only just discovered this excellent layout!Some real quality modelling going on.It oozes with LMS period atmosphere,and the lamp-lit evening shots are amazing.I also love the idea of 75%  sized buidings at the rear to give an impression of greater depth!That's deffo one trick to remember.
          Looking forward to more posts in the near future.

I was always dead scared of ripping up track that I had gone through the exhaustive process of laying, wiring, testing and fettling. The relief of finally getting on with the job and fixing what was annoying me is well worth the effort.

Totally agree there. I procrastinated for ages but what did it for me was the sunshine. I accidently left the blinds open and the sun warped a section of track on the tighe bend which was causing an issue! That gave me a  good reason to get on with it. He definately moves in mysterious ways as that was the kick up the a..e i needed!!!!

I use something similar on my layout 
Tam Valley Depot    and I am very happy with that concept.

What make figures are you using?

Mixture. The railway gang near the lineside hut at AC Stadden. Most others are PD Marsh, Airfix, Prieser and Dapol.
