It is almost 12 months to the day that my Windows 10 upgrade reinstalled itself for the 10th plus time (I lost count…) and the reinstallation, not me,  decided it could not do it any more.

It took a bit to install Xubuntu 15 but it did retrieve my valuable files and computer but I have had stability with Linux that MS only promised but never delivered for me… I would be hard pressed to trust that company with anything ever again…  plus the price is right on Linux software in general means there is little or no turning back and the learning curve was not a great one by any stretch…

So Owen if you feel you might like to change… do it!!

Regards from Melbourne

It can be downloaded from here Alan, and I expect you'll want the 64bit version

http://xubuntu.org/getxubuntu/

You'll need a CD/DVD drive to burn the downloaded file onto a CD

When booting the CD to do the install, it gives the option to install alongside any current O/S or wipe the PCs disk.

Just install alongside Windows 10 and when it's all done you'll get a boot menu each time you switch on.

Just had another look at that link Alan, you need to select United Kingdom and then

  xubuntu-16.04-desktop-amd64.iso

  dated 2016-07-19 22:10  1.2G

from near the bottom of the list.

Posts crossed Alan.

See my last post for the file to download.

Once it's downloaded you can burn the file to a CD with whatever software Windows currently uses for doing that.

Thought I'd add, that 1.2G after the date is the file size, so the download may take a while.

Some years ago I contemplated Linux, but decided against it when looking for a driver it classified my then almost new OKI colour laser as only suitable for a paper weight so no driver; it worked fine in XP and 7 for many years, until I replaced it with a newer model, the old one is still working fine for a mate of mine.

The OKIs print on card up to 200+gsm, and banner paper up to 1200mm long (which is great for backscenes).

Answer's in the question Mike, "almost new".

When any new bit of kit comes out you have to wait for someone to write a piece of driver software for it, although HP were/are pretty good at supplying drivers through Linux Imaging and Printing software (HPLIP).

On the other hand it's open source and there are no 'fat cats' sitting back making mega-bucks out of users.

Almost new in that I had only had it a few weeks, however that model had been on the market for well over a year. The paperweight comment was in a list of printers  with comments as to why there was no driver for certain models.

I tried Linux about a year ago.  It was more trouble than it was worth.  It's OK if you are a Geek, but ordinary people will always use a commercial product.

Computers are like any other product today.  We expect more and more of them, but aren't prepared to outlay the dollars to keep our equipment up to date.

Forums are part of some modellers' paradigms.  They need to be kept up to date as well.  This forum has out of date codes to run the Gallery.  It works fine with off site photo hosting, but a range of browsers are becoming incompatible with the old code with runs the Gallery.

Windows 10 is pointing up this disparity.

Raging against the machine will achieve nothing.

That's good, Alan.  Hopefully there will be no more silly talk about Linux.
