D I Y or Pay an expert to fit Decoder

To be honest Kevin with the Adams 02 you are probably better to get someone to fit that for you that is not exactly a capacious loco yes its possible for you to do but i think a bit more experience fitting sound to locos may be needed before tackling something like that.

This Chap Richard Croft runs a small business from home offering a supply and fitting service he does seem to be very respected in the modelling community.

You can't add sound to a standard decoder - you have to buy a sound decoder, usually supplied with the sound files already loaded.  You just specify the loco and they load the file for you.
Not quite true. You can add a sound decoder to a DCC equipped locomotive, it just has to have the same address as the function decoder. There are issues with BEMF as it is not driving a motor. Digitrax sell something called a "Sound Bug", - SFX006 Soundbug for DH165xx decoders and others - that can be added to some of its function only decoders. Only slightly less expensive than their regular sound decoder. MRC do something called a "Sounder" for diesel or steam that works with any function decoder. Retails for $39, and that includes a stay-alive and a speaker. Generic sounds, but if you want to add sound to an existing locomotive that already has a function decoder installed it can save some money.

Hi Nigel. Of course I knew that, but was forgetting what I had done in the recent past. I must be getting old, forgetting about that . I usually go on recommendations , but diy seemed a good idea. Then again I don’t know how it should sound so I would prefer to get it done by someone with a good reputation to live up to. Best wishes Kevin

If you aren’t 100% sure you can do it ask someone else to. It doesn’t cost that much for one to be fitted in most cases.

Hi Chris.  Thank you for your reply. Your advice is good, but I, wanted to have a go at something different, whilst I have got so much time on my hands. then again if it isn’t too expensive it could be better to pay someone else?    Best wishes Kevin

Hi Chris.  Thank you.  Today allegedly, the workmen are coming to fit a second bannister , so once the occupational therapist is happy with me getting up and down the stairs I should be okay. I understand what you are saying, but, after Ricks comments and the ease of the 02 Loco to remove the cab, I wanted to try one for myself.   Best wishes Kevin

Hi Chris.  Good news, Bad news. The “ Craftsman “ came today and fitted the banister? I could have done a better job than that. He said that “ the walls were soft and that I shouldn’t put any weight on the bannister? He didn’t even use plasterboard plugs, but better yet he should have located the “ Studs “ that are holding the plasterboard to the wall. I must only use it for balance? When he cut the bannister, he took a great chunk of wood out of it.Best wishes Kevin

Hi Chris   Thank you for your reply. I haven’t yet purchased one, I had intended to pay to have an experienced Modeller to do the job, until I read Ricks thread on weathering the 02.   Best wishes Kevin

I'd get someone from Social Services (or whatever they're called nowadays) to have a look at that handrail Kevin.

If jerry builders are being paid to do poor quality and dangerous work, it's absolutely unacceptable.

Hi Petermac.   Thank you for your reply. I didn’t stand, or sit, studying his workmanship, but if I did I may have upset him and not get the job done at all. And this workman didn’t work for himself but for a well known contractor.Best wishes Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Sorry for the late reply, but it seems to me that you'd probably have been better off if this bloke hadn't done the work in the first place. Particularly if it's a stud wall, there's absolutely no excuse! A bannister/handrail is supposed to be able to support someone's weight without coming away. As Peter said, the sosial services are the people to sort this out.

Have you been able to get upstairs yet?

Cheers Pete.

Hi Peterm   Thank you for your reply. The Bannister aside, it took a second “ technition” to finish the job.But the truth of the matter I have three seemingly impossible Locos that I would like to convert to DCC.
Best wishes Kevin
