Hi my name is Martin live in west Yorkshire.
I am retired due to ill health problems at 40. age now 57 married 3 boys
since i had my first ever train set back in the early 60s i have allows Dreamt of having a layout
first train set was a tri-ang princess Elizabeth set (still have the loco and the 2 c&b coaches and she still runs.
Its took me till i retired to start thinking about a layout so i started
first one was a tiny thing around a box room very nice but wanted bigger humm new house so i moved from Rugeley Staffordshire to west Yorkshire room probs still to small, so i searched the net and found people was running 00 gauge
in shed and in garden, so the 2nd layout was around the garden it was amazing but due to health it was a fine weather hobby.
not happy with that i had a shed fitted 10x8 ft, now i could run locos inside in the colder weather, from the shed i had tracks running into the garden for the dryer/warmer times all in dc yes happy, (No!) i wanted more so i started using dcc i was amazed by this system. i had a large out side station with a pull over canopy to protect it in the bad weather.

I got up there was sun lets play trains. Went outside to find the outside station had been smashed down. thinking to my self well what the f going on, then next door did you hear the noise last night police after a chap, the chap went fence hopping and landed on the station area.
so i moved the track to the other side of the garden were it remained till end of last year, reason i ripped it all out
adding a 2nd shed so now it will be 20x8ft then running into garden 90% dcc and 10% dc
name of my layout is W-H-R Meaning ( Woodside Heritage railway )
i love the steam locos but have this past year started collecting more modern stuff deltics etc up to the 373 hst
please note i am no expert just doing something i love with my time and still learning…

"00" in the garden - that's what I've always had a yearning for but I think the weather is too extreme here - short sharp winters and hot summers.  I shudder to think what it would do to the track ………….. :roll: :roll: :roll:

Some great videos there - I'll have to spend a few more hours watching them.

Outside 00 gauge lay the track when its cold leaving a 3mm gap to allow for expansion from the sun. track used is 1 mtr sl100 nickel silver just need to run a cleaning car around before starting any run days

Yes, in theory Martin.  I have friends who have tried "00" in the garden but most gave up because of the effort required to keep the trackbed clean - even a misplaced blade of grass can cause a derailment.

Regarding temperatures, we usually range from minus 10C to plus 35C here, although we can often exceed both.  I think I'd need some pretty big expansion joints …………….. :roll: :roll: :roll:

The general Advice I have gleaned from the OO garden Railway site, is not to have the railway at ground level due to the F.O.D. hazard(Foreign Object Damage), and because of the  B.A.P. ( Back Ache Pain)

I like the site owners ideas and his layout of building his outside track on a viaduct of carved thermalite blocks stood on end ( easy to do with a hand saw)  look up "worsley dale garden railway".
I will be modifying that up to 3ft off of the ground at that's the height it will come off of the main layout in the shed. When not in use my line will have upturned rain guttering to protect the track from the worst hazzards.

 There are members of that site with successful "00" garden railways all over the world including IIRC southern France.

Thanks for that Q - I'll have a look at Worsley Dale and see what he's up to.  I do have the basics for a G Scale setup - I have a Bachmann 2 truck Shay, a couple of logging wagons and a bit of track which never see the light of day, but I do fancy using my "OO" stuff if possible.

Moving outside would overcome indoor limitations we'll have if our house move plans come to fruition ………. :roll: :roll: :roll:
