A bit about me and my interests

I've just retired and in the process of unpacking and  and setting up an oo gauge layout that's been in the loft of several houses for 20 or so years, I've indulged in a few more modern locos too.  I like the Era when i used to travel on the train to go to school namely the early 60s.   I have a collection of DMU's  Blue pullmans westerns warships a Hymek and some railcars.   Initially I hated the concept of Dcc know I've been fully won over and just purchased a Roco Z21 system and yesterday fitted my class 121 with a sound chip it's awesome.  This is going to become very expensive! I'm not really a club person but have joined my local club at Kidderminster and am enjoying the company of like minded people.  Having just retired I'm still adjusting to the concept of being able to spend all day in the railway room and not feel guilty of losing one day of the weekend cos I can do it any day now.
The layout will be (because I bought a layout too and have the baseboards) a 6x4 with a 10x2 fixed to one side of the four foot there will have to be a bulge at the far end to take in the return of the loops.

Hi Roger,

Welcome to the club. DCC sound decoders are (slowly) getting less expensive, so as long as you keep the fleet reasonable in size it's well worth it. If you have DCC sound you can always turn it down or off, try that with a non-sound decoder. The one thing that bugs me is sound coming from tenders, a problem avoided with diesels.

Many thanks for that I fully agree on the sound from tenders.  I have mainly diesels because 39 years ago the electric motor did sound vaguely dieselish and steam sound wasn't really available.  Now of course as a dmu and blue Pullman addict I shall have the same issue with the sound in say a three car set.  Later on down line the line I shall experiment with hooking up mini power jumpers like the tenders use to position the speaker in the middle and may be control lighting in coaches and at the other end!

At 6'4'', Bill is a tall chap, then again, when horizontal he is rather long and people often used to trip over him! . . . and so a nickname was born :)

Have a great holiday Roger, you'll most likely be driving past quite near us on your way, where we enjoy life in the beautiful Loire valley in an old wine producing village. The Vendée has lots to offer, so have fun.

Well we did pass fairly close to you a good few signs for Saumur.  I'm very interested to know why there were so many electric locomotives parked up at Rouen, by the side of the main road going south there were approx half a mile of them and two or more tracks deep nearly a national fleet?Regards Roger

Hi Roger,

Yes, Sotteville Yard provides a sorry picture of hundreds of locos on Google Earth and SNCF has been laying up many electrics for years due to the down turn in freight traffic. Many diesels have been scrapped and lots have been sold and also leased.

Take a look at:

http://www.railpictures.net/showphotos.php?city=Rouen&country=France and there's also a thread over on RMWeb at:

http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/118634-stored-sncf-locos-and-tgvs-at-stotteville-yard/

Cheers,

Bill
