Weathering Dapol Pressflo Cement Wagons

Paint and powder approach.

Back in October last year, Dapol had a special on their Pressflow wagons, five for £22.00, so I jumped at them. Finally, 7 months later, I have decided to weather these wagons. Nothing special, just the use of my airbrush, powders and IPA.

First up, I sprayed a cement coloured grey about the body and on the chassis.

…followed by some 'grime' on the chassis and axle boxes etc.. This also helps to tone the black and red (?) body down.

Next up was the application of 'rust' to the top, body, frames, W irons and brakes using powders. This was applied with Isopropyl alcohol… Some light dusting also was applied around the floor.

A close up of all the 'rust' powders and paint added so far..,

The use of light grey weathering powders are applied. By dipping the tip of a paint brush into the IPA, then dipping into the powders, a wt solution can be applied to the body. In some areas, this can be applied heavily, then with a bigger soft brush, streaks can be made as well as evening out the wet powders into some of the wagons recesses.

Above and below are both sides of the same wagon.

Not the best pic, but all five wagons together showing the variation of weathering applications.

The next step is to give the wagons a sealing of clear matt lacquer. I chose Testors Dullcote for this, unfortunately no pic. What I did find once a light application of lacquer was sprayed, is that the 'cement' powders became 'flat'. To fix this, I applied more powder using a small brush and IPA. By picking up a lot of powder on the brush, I was able to get some 'lump' in the texture, especially on the top and within the recesses of the wagon. This must be done whilst the lacquer is still wet. Allow the IPA/powders to dry before applying a second coat of lacquer.

These two pics were taken outside as the light inside wasn't the best.

The roof of the wagons showing that the spilt cement around the hatch and in the recesses has some texture to it.

Well, there we have it, five weathered Dapol Presflos. These five wagons are my 'practise' wagons as I'm waiting on the delivery of Bachmann Presflos, which have been on sale at Hattons. Once arrived, I'll have six more to weather !

Comments and critisism welcome… ;-)

Cheers, Gary.

G`day Gary,
Very realistic effect you`ve got there and of course every one is different as it should be. They stand up really well considering your using macro photography, which normally will show whatever has been missed. They look like the real deal to me.!!
Well done:thumbs:thumbs:thumbs:thumbs:thumbs.

Very interesting Gary.  If I might make one small point.  Are you working from photos?  I haven't yet seen a picture of a Presflo with spillage marks so obviously in line with the roof hatches.  The weathering usually appears to be more generally spread around the upper part of the wagon.  Have a look at these photos:

or these

I assume that being in powder form, the cement gets generally spread around the upper parts of the wagon and then wind and rain do their stuff.  Hope this is of interest.

Terry

Hi Gary,

Judging by the photo's in Terry's post maybe a bit more of a spread may be required. However, the general build up of grime and rust is excellent.

They look good either way.

You take to these things like a duck to water. Fab.:thumbs

Cheers

The photo I worked off, had cement all down the sides. I can see that after a fair amount of use, cement would find its way into the body side recesses, caused by wind rain etc. On the second link that Terry posted, pictures 12, 15, 31, 111 and 138 clearly show cement in the recesses of the body sides. ;-)

Atleast these Dapol wagons are only the test mules, as I have just taken delivery of my new Bachmann models.

Six of these little beauties… :thumbs The detail on these wagons is just stunning with all the pipe work, seperate handles and levers, signage etc…

Cheers, Gary.

A grotty lot of Dapol, seems a pity to do the same to the new Bachmann.

I'm actually looking foward to weathering the Bachmann models. With some practise from weathering the Dapol models, I can now refine my techniques and make changes to make these wagons better ! I need to concentrate on the body sides to get that well worn/rusted panels looking like they should on the 12":1' scale models. ;-)

Cheers, Gary.

I like what you've done, Gary.  :thumbs

What I don't understand is the big signs on the sides.

What's that all about?

My Bachmann wagons have also arrived Gary.  When can I send them to you for the treatment?

Maybe that's the reason Dapol were selling packs of five for £22.00…;-)

In hindsight, what I should have/could have done was to see if the signs come off easily enough…

Hi Gary,

Nothing wrong with the Dapol versions Gary. They'll look good on the layout.
As I said before, I particularly like the rusting you've done. I'd be over the moon if I could manage that.

cheers

Toto
