Weathering a Coal Lorry

I remember the local coal merchant trundling around the village, with the young 'un on the lorry bed holding onto the coal scales for dear life as it went around the corners. The correct weight (1 cwt) was made for every sack from a spare sack. No rails, ropes or stakes. The sacks were filled to an approximate weight in the station yard. This was a drop-sided lorry, they were kept that way as it was too much trouble to keep lowering and raising the sides when it was stopping at every house. Probably 75% coal (slack and small lump), 25% coke, which was delivered in the bigger sacks.
