So that this valuable "how to" does not get lost in the main post, I've made a copy of Wayne's method for making firewood logs here.

I'll lock it so that it doesn't get swamped, so please make any comments in the original thread.

Well I have figured out how to make the fire wood that will go inside the wood shed. I purchased a wood dowel 1/8" and 1/4" in diameter. Painted it a brown color to represent the bark and chopped it up into 3/8" long pieces. I also peeled off the edge of a scrap piece of plywood using a utility knife, slivers of wood, then chopped them into 3/8" lengths.

This picture shows on the left side the plywood pieces and the painted ones from the dowel rods on the right. You may note that I was not to neat in my cuts, leaving slivers sticking out from the cut ends. Made for more realistic looking pieces in my mind anyway. I did eventually remove some of the longer looking pieces though.

I then painted the ends of the dowel rod pieces to look like the heart of a tree.
I then took my x-acto knife and placed it on top of each "Log" and tapped down on the blade with a tack hammer to "split" the wood in half, did it again with each half, to quarter each log.

Here is the result, the split logs have been inserted into a plasticard housing that will not be seen from the outside of the wood shed.

This picture shows the wood setting as it will be inside the shed. I used PVA (White Glue) to hold the wood logs in place.

Now the fire wood setting inside the wood shed viewed from above.

And here is the final picture showing what you would see as viewed on the layout.
