James,

Have you considered growing your own trees?   All the trees on my layouts are made from plants growing in my garden or at the roadside.

There are many plants suitable for making trees that can easily be grown in a small garden, greenhouse or even in pots on a balcony!

For example 'Sea Moss', which is incredibly expensive to buy can be easily grown at home for only the cost of a packet of seeds.   So for about £2.75 you could have 100's of trees for your layout plus a healthy supply of seeds for next years crop!

'Ice Plant' (Sedum) is another example.   The dried flower heads make exceptionally good, scale height, trees for about 2p. Each.   There are many other plants suitable for making trees if you know where to look, and can see the potential.

I think you live not too far from me, so if you are interested and would like some practical 'hands on' assistance, just let me know and I would be pleased to help.

John.

Being a cheapskate I buy the Chinese Ebay trees in various sizes, to improve them I put a small amount of mixed green scatter (shades depend on type of tree wanted and season) in a plastic food/freezer bag, spray the trees with spray mount, drop them in the bag of scatter and shake well.

Pulling the Chinese trees apart - untwisting the wire  - to separate then cut off the main branches gives ideal pieces for hedges or bushes, or spread out and stuck onto walls for ivy or similar climbing plants; the spray mount and bag of scatter can work just as well on these "off cuts".

Gary's method (above) can't be beat for individual trees, but for woods or part of a forest or for trees further back on the layout the Chinese Ebay ones can do the job quicker and cheaper.

Cheers MIKE
