We have flocks of egrets and cormorants in the fields around us throughout most of the winter.  The egrets are timid birds, the cormorants slightly less so but occasionally, they are prepared to pose for the odd hastily grabbed snapshot.

The weather was kind enough this morning to permit me to sit on the veranda surveying the flooded fields as I drank my mid-morning coffee.  Obviously I wasn't the only one lapping up the few hours of sunshine and I grabbed this shot. Around 6 or 8 cormorants (the black ones) were lucky enough to find space amongst a tree full of egrets.  The tree is on the edge of an irrigation lake - the "lakes" you can see are the receding result of a week or two of heavy rain:

This is the same field in summer ………………..the above tree is the big one just to the left of the combine :

Makes you forget the madness when surrounded with such peace and tranquillity.

At 6'4'', Bill is a tall chap, then again, when horizontal he is rather long and people often used to trip over him! . . . and so a nickname was born :)

Yup.  "Egrets, we've had a few, but then again too few to mention…"
