Back into modelling OO

Hello all, sad to say I've not been participating in my favourite hobby for longer that I care to think about. Owing to circumstance involving family Children's broken marriages and my health I've been neglecting my layout. Since last posting on here I have been diagnosed with Osteoarthritis in both hips and a gammy knee it's been hard to get around to it . Now things have settled down hopefully I'll get back to it. I Hope you are all copping with COVID 19, I find it a bit confusing with the laws etc at times. Well that's just a brief how goes it from me. Take care everyone and stay safe!

Regards to all

Ron

Hi RonSorry to hear your news, but glad that things have settled and you will be able to pick things up again on the layout.  Hopefully you will have some pictures to show, getting back into it.  I find the kind encouragement from fellow members helps me to keep things going, even when I don't have as much time to spend on the hobby as I would like.  and hopefully you will join in with choosing the picture of the month for the front page, I find it quite motivating going through the threads, past and present. And it's always nice to welcome members back after a break.

As to all the Covid rules - well even the government seem to lose track of what's what, so no surprise we do too!

Hi Ron - good to see you back but sorry to hear you've been through the mill over the last few months  -  all part of life's rich pageant I suppose.  As someone said,  once you've to hit rock bottom, things can only improve.  Hopefully, the future will be brighter for you too from now on.

Following on from what Michael said about the Picture of the Month, looking through the many threads would be an excellent way to both refresh your memory and catch yup on what's been going on since your last visit.

Regarding the ever changing Covid regulations ?  It seems the only good thing about them is they keep your brain agile !!!   :cheers

Hi Chris, There are a few photo's of some stuff I did a while ago on here. I think I will be starting the layout from scratch using the track, buildings etc I used before it shouldn't be too difficult to work them into the layout I have in mind.

Just a quick update on my planned layout, I managed to get some more material to extend the length from 6' to 9' every little helps as the old lady said. As I still work three days a week my time for modelling is restricted to Thursday to Sunday. Have to say I'm grateful to Terry for e-mailing me some copies of end to end layouts thanks for you help. That's about it for now.

Hi Ron,
I haven't been on here for a few weeks due to my circumstances.
Sorry to hear about your health both mental and physical and family issues. I hope that things can get sorted for you as quickly as possible.
I am probably as guilty as a lot of people here by not posting full pics of my layout. Alas my layout is no more and now packed into boxes due to the imminent move back to the UK.
I feel quite lost at the moment without the layout but there is and always will be a light at the end of that tunnel.
Thursdays through to Sundays is ample time to plod on steadily to build and play so please don't let that concern you. Good luck with your issues and layout construction.
We never know what is around the corner, and I certainly didn't, so please enjoy your few days a week with the layout and please post some pics when you can.

Hi Gary, thanks for your kind words. Sorry to hear about your circumstances, having to pack up your layout and pending return to the UK. I hope to do some work on the baseboard these next few days, if all goes as planned. When I have some progress and photo's worth showing I'll certainly post it on here.
Take care and stay safe Gary.

I spent a couple of worthwhile hours this afternoon ordering some tools and checking my inventory of model railway items. Now trying to make up my mind whether to go for an 18" or 24" wide base board? I may draw up a plan for an 18" and see what I can get into it. I have to bear inmind the amount of room I've got to operate in which is the problem.

After much thought on where to plan my layout I came up with the following idea:
Benson Station
Wallingford to Watlington Railway
Oxfordshire
As the title suggests the layout will be based on the station which might have been, Benson Station on the Wallingford to Watlington line.
The first plans for the Cholsey to Wallingford railway dates back to 1861 and envisaged an independent route from Moulsford to Princes Risborough via Wallingford, Benson, Watlington and Cholsey. This line would be a through route with junctions at both Moulsford and Princes Risborough with a small station at Benson.
The railway was sold to GWR in 1872and the line became known as the Wallingford Bunk (where the name originated is unknown). The line was open to passenger and goods traffic and served the Maltings (closed in 1981) on the outskirts of Wallingford.
In my plan the line was finished between Wallingford and Watlington with a station built in Benson, the line ran adjacent to Littleworth Road in the village and the trains passing along the line carried airmen posted to RAF Benson and collected watercress grown at the famous Benson and Ewelme watercress beds and other produce from local farms and businesses.
I will post future progress and photos in time, wish me luck!

At 6'4'', Bill is a tall chap, then again, when horizontal he is rather long and people often used to trip over him! . . . and so a nickname was born :)

Thanks for the link Bill, havoing a look at the planned layout, ironically it's along the lines I was thinking of planning. I'ts good to see some minds think along the same lines, excuse the pun.

Thank you Peter, I've not quite worked out where to fit the watercress beds in yet.I think a bit more research is called for there.

Hi Ron,

If you haven't already found it,  see http://www.ewelmewatercressbeds.org/ for the Ewelme watercress  industry. I did a lot of research on the area around Watlington for my on-hold Watlington layout build, so I am familiar with the watercress industry.

My  latest EM/4mm plank build (which is incorporating various cameos from a  number of stations, including Aston Rowant on the Watlington line) has a  Chilterns limestone stream with some watercress beds. Just a nod to  those that were at Ewelme and one of the local agricultural industries that survived until the 1980's.

Carting it to the closer "Benson" station will cut down on time and cost. If you have a look at some of the stations on the Watlington branch you might get some inspiration for what Benson would have looked like.

Nigel
A couple of additional thoughts. Wallingford had a gas works next to the station, Watlington's was in the town. plenty of coal traffic. Most small towns had one. Wallingford had a CWS creamery, so any local milk traffic would probably go there. You will need 2 fiddle yards with a through station (something I'm grappling with at the moment - how long, where?).

Hello guys,

Over the last couple of days I've been trawling through this site and many others to find out where I buy some wicker baskets such as the type watercress was transport in back in the 50's/60's. Anyone any ideas where I can get them would be most welcome?
