Summer vs autumn in Aquitaine

Flood 1.JPG What a difference a season makes - roughly the same view firstly in December, then in summer.  No wonder this part of France is called "Aquitaine" !!

Is there a river nearby Peter, or is that just a very large puddle?

No river nearby Ed.  There's a ditch/dyke running along the right hand edge of the flood but it's absolutely full.  The "puddle" in the foreground is in fact a man-made lake for summer irrigation.  The rest of the water you see is flood water.  Happens every year.  It's clay soil and the water just can't get away.  Stupid really - everything is swamped in winter yet they need these lakes to irrigate in the summer.  Very difficult for farmers - whatever they plant in the autumn is usually drowned by spring and for spring sowing there's such a small window when the land is dry enough to cultivate before it bakes rock hard when we get some decent sunshine …..
