Hi All.  I really don’t want to buy a new telly! But, I didn’t want to miss the final episode of The Great Model Railway Challenge either. and spending my Model Railway budget on a one eyed monster, when it could do something worthwhile. So what do I do? There is two local railway lines passing by the front door ?almost. And they make an awful mess of TV Reception. So just after we moved in I arranged for a Sky dish which gives perfect reception.Now I am told that a Sky dish isn’t any good. Best wishes Kevin

If it gives perfect reception, why isn't it any good?  Everyone is an expert!!  If it works, don't fix it!!  But there are also lots of broadband providers, if you can go that way……

Hi Michael. Thank you for your reply. My previous telly was twenty years old, but it worked fine with the Sky dish, until it stopped working, If I purchase a new “ smart television “ ? I have been told that the Sky dish would be no good,and I need a loft aerial? But, with the Southern, the South Eastern,  the Thameslink and the London Overground passing Close by all day, that  would be back to square one. And anyway I would rather spend the time on the railway. Best wishes Kevin 

I watch the challenge on my PC don't have a TV.

Hi Mike.  Thank you very much. But I am using my iPad at the time. Admittedly I have a BBC iPlayer Account,alas I cannot get channel 5 . I did manage however to watch 4 on my laptop, maybe I should get around to fixing it?

Well, I wasn't aware that YouTube was geographically restricted in the same way as the on demand TV channels are, eg BBC, Ch4, Ch5, etc, as the link works just fine for me in France. 

Sorry you're having such difficulties Kevin. Can anyone in the UK see it on Youtube?

Never mind, 2 of the 3 layouts weren't that great, but there were certainly some characters there.

To be honest there have been a couple of reasonable layouts so far, and a lot of not so good, and some of the "characters" especially in the first episode came across as way to cocky (polite version) for my liking.

I consider myself lucky then, that the Sky system works well here (42" monitor since size apparently matters :)), as does YouTube and Amazon Prime, not that I've watched TV that much all summer, as being outdoors is way more fun.

I think you need to go to a store that knows what they are selling. There are ways to configure a smart tv so it works with sky, you may need somebody to set it up. Plus interface boxes are available if you want freesat.

Doesn't the UK have internet TV? Our smart Samsung is connected wirelessly to the TV cable  box and internet. The former with an add-on transmitter/receiver, the latter as a device.

Any TV can be connected to a satellite dish with an appropriate box (in my case Freesat), you just need to select the correct input on the TV, e.g. HDM1, or whatever connection you've used to connect the box to the TV.

You don't have to use the inbuilt Freeview of Freesat receivers in the TV.

Hi Nigel. Thank you. As I said the recent TV to breakdown is twenty years old . And I have been told that the new TV ‘s have different connections to my Sky box, which I suppose is the interface. And that would mean a new one. But modern TV’s come with Freeview Built in, apart from that, if you consider the fact that I only returned to Model Railways because of the Rubbish that is broadcast every day. Best wishes Kevin

Hi Ed. Thank you . I am open to any advice? But I have read a lot of “ facts “ about altzimers ? And sitting in the armchair in front of the TV all day doesn’t do one any good. And with the repeats that are broadcast daily that just adds insult to injury.

In my case Kevin, it's just generally background noise.

However, I do watch the news bulletins and there are some good railway, general engineering and history programmes on the Yesterday channel.
 
There are also some good old comedy programmes that still make me laugh, however many times I've seen them.
