Learned last night that Roy - of Retford fame- died at the weekend. Had the privilege of spending a morning with Roy  a couple of years ago. Retford is a superb model. I hope that it can be saved.

Very sad news. I am a follower of the layouts development and have seen the amazing work that Roy and his team achieved.  Cliff Parsons of Gresley Beat fame is/was looking to start a huge model railway museum project down in Ashford Kent. It would be fitting if Retford could end up there.

The model railway museum hit the buffers last year, when it was refused a government grant to buy the land (and I assume old Ashford works building) to house the museum.  but to the best of knowledge, the project is still running and further applications will be made in the future.  It would be great if it comes off……

Very sad news, I didn't know Retford, but I do now.

I see Cliff Parsons regularly as he is a member of my club.  The museum project is still very much going ahead.  The Ashford site was found to have problems which resulted in an alternative site having to be found.  Cliff is very upbeat about future plans.

That is great to know, at it would be great if Retford could find a home there.

I'm with you Michael - I didn't know Roy Jackson - at least, not that one - and I didn't know Retford but do now.

An interesting layout which reminds me slightly of Tony Wright's Little Bytham - loads of space and authenticity.

Roy's Retford layout is based on his birthday - can't remember the date - and every train is an authentic reproduction of those that ran on that day, even down to the carriage and wagon numbers. It takes 4 hours to complete a whole days  running to the exact schedule. Roy obtained his information from archives held at Doncaster or York NRM. I first met Roy on Retford station in the fifties when we were both trainspotting  and when I saw Retford a couple of years ago I was absolutely gobsmacked with the sheer detail he had captured.

You are lucky man to have seen it in the flesh.
All based on his birthday - carriage numbers and all… just wow!

Same here, I knew a different one (Gauge 0 Guild and my local club, S.& D.M.R.C.)
