Freezer packed up, kaput, not working

Hi All. Wouldn’t you know it, my freezer has frozen it’s last. And there’s me up the creek without a paddle. It isn’t as if I can go out by myself, walking to the end of the Close with the physiotherapist was one thing, but that did me in fo the afternoon. Even if I purchase a new one it will take an age to get delivered? Or I could take a Chance and have it repaired if I can find someone that will do the job.I have a bin a load of pies etc. I have been recommended a Paella, from Morrison which does sound good, The carer has gone to church, he does go shopping for me but likes to take a photo of what I want rather than take a list, but, as I haven’t had paella before I haven’t got a packet for him to photograph , what a predicament I am in.
Please advise. Best wishes Kevin

Hello Kevin,
I would not be buying a lottery ticket if I were you lately… I presume that the cost of repair would be ludicrous although I hate the waste factor involved in the replace rather than repair attitude these days! Not fun!

AFAIK, our first Australian built fridge is still going ( we left it at the old house) but it outlasted 3 others (built you know where) and I suspect it will still be going when the fridge we relegated to the second one in the garage goes with only a thermostat replacement  nearly 30 years ago.  Can you get on line and do a quick search for a freezer of your local high street shops?  Phone perhaps?

When the thermostat did go, we thought that was it for that fridge and bought a new one as it was on the cusp of summer but a repairer found the fault and it ran well for years, just the newer one could fit in the cavity that the old one could not.

Good luck mate!  Sorry I'm not closer enough to help you out more directly!

Regards

Trevor

Hi Trevor. Thank you for your reply. I got in a panic? But after another day, the red light extinguished? I will give it another couple of days though before I take a chance on more food, I will try the ice cube test. Best wishes Kevin

I am but today even South Oz is in line for fires. Though the cool change is due later in the day & drop temp by 15-20 degrees.
Currently at 6:30AM still 32C after it hit 46C where I live north of Adelaide. Max on the other hand down south of Adelaide near big lakes, had around 25C during the day and 27C now.

You have to adopt a different mindset regarding distances when you live in Oz. Today we had our first smoke haze of the summer, blowing into Melbourne from Southern NSW only some 400 or 500+ km away. Remarkably so far, Victoria has been spared the fire horrors experienced in NSW and Qld.

Still today was no picnic either, 38C by 11 am and 43C late afternoon. The smoke cut back radiant heat levels from the sun but still it felt like someone had a hair dryer blowing into your face.

I'm lucky, as I live 5 km from the Sydney CBD area, so not many trees or scrub land to worry about spontaneously combusting.
However, my plans to drive out of the city for Xmas have been cancelled, due to the fires surrounding the Greater Sydney area.

Fire services have published this map of the extent of the fire front surrounding us.

As Colin stated "You have to adopt a different mindset regarding distances when you live in Oz".

  • CBD to Penrith is 50km (30 miles),
  • CBD to Wollongong is 80kmn (50 miles),
  • CBD to Newcastle 160km (100 miles),
  • CBD to Bathurst 190km (118 miles)
so you can see the extent of the NSW fires.

We are being told not to venture out on the major highways as the RFS (Rural Fire Service) cannot guarantee the roads will be open due to smoke, fire or appliances blocking traffic.

the tragedy is that a lot of historical buildings are being destroyed, not to mention the wildlife trapped in the parklands and bush land, but that pales into insignificance to the loss of life so far.

Two firefighters have lost their lives fighting these horrendous, apocalyptic blazes. They were volunteers, and do not get paid for fighting these fires.

All we can do in the city is sit tight, and hope our brave fire fighters contain and subdue these fires as safely as they can.
